There are 158 staff members including 20 professors, 44 associate professors, 42 lecturers and 13 engineers. About 1380 undergraduate, 306 graduate students and 46 Ph.D students are enrolled at the present time.

The school offers core courses in mathematics, physics and chemistry to all students in the university, as well as advanced courses to students specializing in mathematics, chemistry or physics.

Department of Mathematics and Computer Science

The department can offer bachelor degrees in applied mathematics, information and computing science as well as Master’s degrees in applied mathematics. Of the 36 faculty members in the department, five are full professors, ten are associate professors, twelve are lecturers, and among them, 14 hold doctoral degrees.

The department is responsible for all the mathematical teaching for students specializing in non-mathematical sciences in the university as well as about 450 students specializing in mathematics, information and computing science.

Department of Physics and Electronics

The Department of Physics and Electronics offers Master’s degree in condensed state physics, bachelor degrees in Electronics science and technology and specialty courses and general physics experimental courses for undergraduate students. There are two professors and eight associate professors among twenty-one members of staff. The department has well-equipped laboratories that can offer general physics experimental courses for undergraduate students as well as modern physics experiments for graduate students.

The Department of Chemistry is divided into four teaching groups comprising inorganic and analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry and instrumental analysis, together with a well-equipped experimental chemistry center. There are 42 staff members, including six professors and 14 associate professors. Among them, 23 academic staff having PhD.degrees. The department offers chemistry courses for both undergraduate students and graduate students in the university.

Department of Applied Chemistry

The Department of Applied Chemistry offers bachelor degrees, Master’s degrees, and doctoral degrees in applied chemistry. There are 20 staff members, including four professors and nine associate professors in the department.
The department offers a wide range of courses for undergraduate students and graduate students including Principles of Catalysis, Polymer Chemistry, Organic Synthesis, Inorganic Synthesis, Analytical Chemistry, Chemistry of Interfaces and Applied Electrochemistry Chemistry, etc.

Applied Chemistry Research Institute

The Applied Chemistry Research Institute has 17 permanent staff, including a core research team of 13 all holding Ph.D. degrees, of whom six are full professors. There are currently over 70 research students. The Director of the Institute is Professor DUAN Xue who is a Changjiang Foundation Professor, and has been awarded the titles ‘National Outstanding Young Scholar’ and ‘State Model Worker’ and has received numerous other awards.

Research in the Institute uses state of the art techniques and methodology to tackle major problems of concern to the domestic chemical industry. Fundamental and basic applied research programs in the Institute have resulted in over 200 publications in peer-reviewed journals, and led to more than 50 Chinese patent applications, of which over 20 have been granted to date, and more than 20 international patent applications giving the Institute a high profile, both nationally and internationally. The Institute places a strong emphasis on developing commercial applications based on fundamental research carried out in the laboratory and technology in the Institute has been successfully transferred to more than 20 industrial plants in China.

The Institute also attaches considerable importance to international collaboration and joint research projects have been established with laboratories in the U.K., France, Germany, Italy, Japan and Australia. One Research Scientist from the U.K., Prof. David G. Evans, has worked in the laboratory since 1996. From 2001 onwards, several Ph.D. students have been jointly supervised by staff from the Institute and from Blaise Pascal University in France.

Research Institute of Modern Catalysis

The research institute of modern catalysis, which offers Master’s degrees, and doctoral degrees, was founded in 2001 on the basis of industrial catalysis laboratory. The leader of this institute is Professor Zhang Jingchang, who is supervisor for doctoral graduate, the chief professor of industrial catalysis major with governmental allowance. There are 7 professors (1 academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, 3 supervisors for doctoral graduate and 1 expert with governmental allowance) and 7 associate professors working in this subject. Under the support of “211 project”, the institute is well-equipped with modern equipments for characterization and evaluation of catalysts.

There are many research subjects from national science and technology ministry, national natural science foundation of china and provincial key project. Some encouraging results have been gained in the fields of controllable catalytic reaction, directional synthesis of products, preparation of catalysts with environmental friendship, novel catalysts applied in petroleum processing, integrating reaction and separation, nano-materials, self-assembly of nano-particles, chemistry of energy source, basic theory research of catalysis and molecular designing. More than 10 provincial/ministry awards and 30 patents were awarded. In addition, more than 30 papers were published annually, 30% of which were cited in SCI. Research intercourse and cooperation was established with many world famous universities and research institutes.

Analysis and Testing Center

The Analysis and Testing Center is well-equipped with a collection of sophisticated instruments, serving both the university and outside bodies. There are 13 staff members, including three professors, four senior engineers, offering a series of courses for graduate students, such as electron microscopy, modern analysis and testing technology, spectrometric analysis, instrumental analysis and online IR spectrometry analysis.
