The Department of Electronic Engineering (originally Department of Radio Electronics) of TsinghuaUniversity was established in 1952. Currently it is composed of 3 State-level Labs/divisions (Microwave and Digital Telecommunications Lab, Tsinghua Division of Joint Optoelectronics Lab, and Intelligent Graphics and Image Division of Intelligent Technologies and Systems Lab) and 6 Research Institutes (Information Optoelectronics, Networking and Man-machine Speech Communication, High Speed Signal Processing and Network Transmission, Imaging and Graphics, and Circuit and System). Our faculty includes 2 academicians, 57 full professors and 45 associate professors, while the student body has 1190 undergraduate students and 1282 Master and Ph. D candidates.

This Department is one of the earliest institutions in China engaged in teaching and research in electronics and information sciences. Through continuous and concerted research in basic theory, applied technology and system engineering, integrated with plenty of projects from NSFC, National High Tech Programs and National Key Projects, solid and influential research bases were formed on laser and optics, wireless, networking, and IC, etc. Close academic exchanges, joint laboratories and contracted projects were established and performed with renowned universities, research institutes and industries both at home and abroad. Many outstanding scholars and scientists have been invited as our honorary or guest professors.

The main fields of this Major are:

1 Theories and technologies for information processing, transmission, exchanges, detections, and various telecom systems and networks.


2 Circuit theory, design and applications of the electronic systems, theories and technologies for system simulation and IC design automation.


3 Theories and technologies of microwave antenna and electromagnetic compatibility.


4 Application technologies of electronic circuit, computer, information processing and electromagnetic wave.


There are two state-key labs and one EDA lab founded for the Major; the state-key labs are:

Microwave and Digital Communication State-Key Lab; Intelligent Graphics Sub-Lab of the Intelligent Technology and System State-Key Lab. There are also many advance instruments and facilities for education and research.


Careers prospects for the students of this program: research and teaching in information processing, transmission, exchanges and detection technique; research, production and application of electronic equipment and system; research, application, and development in electronic technology and computer technology; research, application, and development in micro-wave technology.
