FAQ

1) When does your semester begin?
The summer courses begin on July 1, and the fall semester begins on Sep. 1. We do need people to teach the summer courses, but it’s optional.

2) Are the accommodations completely private (not shared)?
Private, with shared stairways. :)

3) Do they have washing machines?
Yes.

4) Approximately how much does the apartment Internet service cost? Is it dial-up or broadband?
Broadband, free. Your computer will have a printer too. There’s also a computer with internet access in the foreign teachers’ office.

5) Do the apartments have heat?
Yes, but beyond a certain limit you have to pay for the electricity. The heat in the office is however completely free.

6) Do foreign teachers receive approximately three weeks of Spring Festival holidays, and National Day and May Day, etc.?
  Yes, like all other universities in China.

7) Are salaries paid during holidays?
The winter vacation is paid, but the summer is only paid to those who teach summer courses.

8) Do the classrooms have audiovisual equipment for PowerPoint presentations?
Many do, but not all of them. You have to ask to be placed in one.

9) How far is the university from downtown? Is there a new campus outside the city?
It takes one yuan to go to any place in Fuzhou by bus. The old campus is in the city, around 10 km to the city center and 15 km to the new campus in the outskirts. All foreign teachers live in the old campus, but we do have classes in the new campus. The school bus takes 20 minutes and 3 yuan to get there right before and after class. You can also take Bus 43, which is slower and costs just one yuan.

10) How many foreigners are there in the university?
There are about 5-7 English speakers and 1-2 Japanese who work as teachers here. And there are almost 200 overseas students, most of whom are studying Chinese in the International College of Chinese Studies.

11) What should I do to apply for a teaching position in FNU?

Here are what we need to proceed:
1. a resume;
2. a copy of your passport;
3. a health certificate (the physical check-up form can be downloaded from Chinese embassy website) if you are abroad;
4. a completed working permit application form (will be sent to you if you are interested and selected);
5. a copy of your credentials;
6. a recommendation letter of your present employer;
7. a scanned photo of yours.
You also need to confirm the date on which you can start working with us. Jean will then fax the contract to you with the settled dates. When you fax back the signed contract, we'll send your files to the provincial departments for approval.
