The Law School of Shanxi University was first established in 1906 with the name of the Major of Law in the Division of Law, among the three divisions of art, law and engineering in the early days since Shanxi University was founded. In 1931 these three divisions were renamed as schools, among which the law school was the largest. There emerged such renowned pioneering scholars in law studies as Bevan, Louisrhys Oxley, Liu Shaobai, Ji Gongquan, Mei Ruao, Du Renzhi, Cheng Guliang, etc. After 1949 the Law School of Shanxi University was merged to several key universities in Beijing as a result of then Institution and Department Reconfiguration Program. In 1980 the department of law was reestablished with the approval of the Ministry of Education. In 1996 the department of law was expanded and renamed as the Law School of Shanxi University.  

Since 1993, rightly led by the CCP Shanxi university committee and the university administration the faculty members and students are keenly engaged in development and reform. As a result the law school has made fruitful achievements in academic and faculty development, educational reform, research, infrastructure, innovative administration and management. At present the Law School of Shanxi University, after the university centennial celebration, persistently tends to conduct national and international cooperation, through pioneering and innovative efforts, to achieve the goal for a first-rate law school in both teaching and research in China.

Faculty
The Law School of Shanxi University has 41 faculty members including 9 full professors and 18 associate professors. Ten faculty members are with or doctoral degrees or doctoral candidates. The faculty under the age 40 are all with at least Master’s degree. Meanwhile 62 prominent specialists in jurisprudence serve as affiliated professors.

Education
The undergraduate students are from 18 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions across China. The student recruitment is listed as the B category of the first round recruitment in the National Examination for Higher Learning Programs. The graduate study programs are open to the student nationwide. Currently the Law School has 1143 registered students including 411 graduate and 732 undergraduate students. More than 8000 students have successfully completed their studies in the past 19 years. The Law School of Shanxi University indeed serves as the largest educational base for multilevel and high quality legal professionals in Shanxi Province.

Research
The Law School of Shanxi University is oriented by its goal of to develop into a first-rate law school in China in both teaching and research. The school increasingly inputs resources in research and enhances academic exchanges. Those efforts have resulted in a series of high quality research achievements, which have greatly strengthened the overall research ability and laid a solid foundation for further academic development.

Since 1993 the faculty of the law school have been involved in 151 research projects, including 5 projects granted by National Social Science Foundation, 5 granted by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Jurisdiction. The grant fund is close to 2 million RMB. The faculty members have published more than 500 research papers in prestigious journals like “Jurisprudence Research”, “China Jurisprudence” etc, among which 106 papers were cited or republished by “Xinhua Digests”, Abstract of China Social Science”, Abstract of Art Studies of Higher Learning Institutions”, “Photocopied Publications of People’s University”. They also published 32 academic works. Those achievements have won the 63 provincial and/or ministerial awards. In the past 5 years the law school has conducted academic cooperation and exchanges with the scholars from China and abroad, establishing collaborative study programs with the law school of USA, UK, Germany, Japan, Canada, Australia etc. The Law School of Shanxi University also hosted two national academic conferences.
