Before the establishment of the new school, since 1985, communications related studies was previously included in the Department of Chinese Language and Literature and from 1998 was taught formally in the Department of Communications. On the day of the establishment of the new school, Tsinghua has for 16 years been teaching journalism and communication both at undergraduate and also at postgraduate level. Based on a solid academic basis of comprehensive research in journalism and communication theory, Tsinghua is developing its leading position in research of the fields of International Communication, Film and Television Studies, New Media Studies, and Media Operation and Management. At the same time, the TSJC has formed a first-class teaching and research team that has furthermore enhanced our influence in the Chinese academic, political and media circles.
The establishment of the new school coincides with the development of media increasingly influencing world affairs in a time of fast-growing globalization. Domestically, China is entering a new period of increased openness and economic reform. After China entry into the WTO, China is playing a more important role in the international community, and China抯 journalism and communication is also faced by many new opportunities and challenges both academically and practically. Against this important background, Tsinghua University has incorporated domestic and international resource to establish this new school.
At the beginning of this new century, Tsinghua University pledges to maintain its historical traditions of excellence, promoting a rigorous academic attitude and seeking perfection in the quality of research. The establishment of the new school is to be a new milestone in the development of Tsinghua in becoming a world leading comprehensive university.
The objective of the new school is: to bring into full advantage Tsinghua University抯 comprehensive academic structure, to construct a first-rate discipline in journalism and communication studies, to cultivate talented professionals in this field and to explore advanced concepts in journalism and communication. The new school is also devoted to maintaining Chinese characteristics whilst further promoting the development of Chinese teaching and research in journalism and communication to an international standard. The school upholds its educational goals in training students to value good professional skills and ethics, and a sense of strong social responsibility. Our aim is to build a multifunctional school for the purposes of teaching, research, training and advanced cooperation in journalism and communication, and eventually contribute to the development and modernization of China in a globalized era.
