About the university

Hainan University is new comprehensive school of higher learning officially established with the approval by the Ministry of Education on August 14th, 2007 of the merger of the former South China University of Tropical Agriculture, SCUTA and the former Hainan University. It is a key university of Hainan Province and is jointly supported by the Ministry of Education and the Hainan Provincial Government. The former South China University of Tropical Agriculture (its forerunner being South China Institute of Tropical Crops), set up in 1958 by the central government to break the blockage and embargo of natural rubber imposed by foreign powers, specialized in rubber and tropical agriculture, and was the sole school in Hainan to run the State Key Disciplines and doctoral programs, which worked closely with China Academy of Tropical Agriculture founded in 1954 (formerly South China Academy of Tropical Crops) to have won over 900 education and scientific research awards, including an Invention Award (first-class), Scientific and Technological Achievement Awards (first- and second- class), and an Education Achievement Award (second-class) at the state level. It helped to fill the blank of China’s rubber industry to make China emerge miraculously as the fifth largest rubber producer in the world, thus contributing considerably to national defense and the social and economic development of the tropical zones. The former Hainan University, established in 1983, was a key provincial university, which received the “Excellence” rating in the Undergraduate Education Assessment conducted by the Ministry of Education in 2006, and was home to a State Base for Cultural Quality Education of College Students. Its name was personally inscribed by Hu Yaobang, the late Secretary General of the Communist Party of China.
In the half century since its founding, the school has been visited and cared for by the elder and the younger generations of Chinese leaders alike, among the elders were Zhou Enlai, Zhu De, Dong Biwu, Ye Jianying, Deng Xiaoping, Hu Yaobang, and Wang Zhen; and the youngers included Hu Jintao, Jiang Zemin, Wen Jiabao, Zhu Rongji, Jia Qinglin and Li Lanqing. After the founding of the new Hainan University, provincial party leader Wei Liucheng and governor Luo Baoming have inspected the university and expressed enormous support for the school.
The university runs three campuses with a total area of 741 acres. They are namely Hainan University at Haidian, Hainan University at Chengxi, and Hainan University at Danzhou. Its main campus is located at Haidian Island of Haikou. The Haidian Campus, nestled along the coast of the South China Sea and dotted by lakes, along with its fragrant tropical flora and long coconut leaves fluttering in refreshing sea breezes, is at once a beautiful tropical sight and an ideal place for learning.
 
 The school offers programs covering 8 categories of disciplines of philosophy，economics, law, literature, natural sciences, agriculture, engineering, management, which then fall into 5 major academic divisions of Tropical Agriculture and Life Science Engineering, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering and Information Engineering, Natural Sciences, Social Studies and the Humanities. The university hosts 20 colleges, three general education divisions, a state key discipline, two key disciplines of the Ministry of Agriculture, 10 provincial key disciplines, two key laboratories of the Ministry of Education, a Ministry of Education Engineering Research Center, four provincial key laboratories and two provincial Engineering Centers. It offers a doctoral program of the first-class discipline, 11 doctoral programs of second-class disciplines, three masters programs of the first-class disciplines, 70 masters programs of the second-class disciplines, 4 programs to confer professional degrees, 16 master’s education programs for faculty of higher learning, a post-doctoral research workshop, 61 undergraduate programs, 10 under- graduate programs of applied studies, and 22 associate’s degree programs for polytechnic and vocational training.
The school boasts a high-level team of full-time faculty and staff with a total number of over 2,500, of which over 1,400 are full-time faculty, including over 500 full professors and associate professors. Currently, there are 1 Top 10 National Outstanding Youth Award winner, 1 national distinguished teacher, 1 candidacy for specially appointed professor of “Scholars of Yangtze River” Project and 1 National Outstanding Youth Fund winner. Moreover, 4 faculty members have been cited in The National New Century Talents Project, 2 supported by Program for New Century Excellent Talents from the Ministry of Education. There are also 5 state-level, 66 province-level or ministry-level experts with remarkable contributions and 61 experts who were granted a special allowance by the State Council. In addition, the school hosts over 300 famous visiting or guest professors from home and abroad.
The university now has a total enrollment of over 31,000 full-time students on campus from 30 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities, including over 25,000 undergraduates as well as over 2,700 master and doctoral students. Since its founding, the university has produced over 70,000 talented graduates including Mr. Lin Chentao and Mr. Lu Jiang, well-known scientists, Mr. Yao Shujie, economic advisor to Food and Agriculture Organization of the Unite Nations. Mr. Lu Feijie, the former head of the State Council Leading Group Office of Poverty Alleviation and Development, Mr. Chen Zhangliang, Vice Chairman of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Mr. Zheng Xiaobo, President of Nanjing Agricultural University and Mr. He Fan, a well-known economist.
Featuring on study of tropical zone, ocean, ecology and the special economic zone as well as making full use of its geographical advantages and its natural resources, Hainan University makes Hainan Province the base of its operations, serving all China as well as Southeast Asia. The university has made remarkable achievement in scientific research and scientific and technological development as well as application of technology, taking charge of or participating in almost 2,000 projects of various kinds including 18 projects of “863 Project”, 14 projects of the National Science and Technology Pillar Program, 69 projects aided by National Natural Science Fund and 12 projects aided by National Social Science Fund. The effort made by the faculty has proved to be very fruitful and has made great contribution to Hainan’s economic and social development, with a yearly increase of the application rate of technology.
The university is committed to cultivating high quality and high level graduates with innovation spirit, entrepreneurship awareness and practical skills. As the quality of the graduates increases year by year, the graduates has won more recognition and enjoyed greater popularity among the community and employers. The graduate employment rate has exceeded 85% for years in a row. Over the past five years, students have won awards and national honors of over 480 kinds, including the first, second and third class prizes and the prize of “Outstanding Organizers” in “The Challenge Cup” National University Student Extracurricular Academic Science and Technology Work Competition, an award for outstanding team of China summer college student volunteers for the rural areas social practice activities" as well as an outstanding achievement award for cultural construction of the college campus and so on.
The university has extensive international academic exchanges and cooperation. Currently, the university has signed agreements on academic cooperation and exchanges with more than 56 well-known overseas universities and institutions from more than 20 countries and regions including France, Singapore, Russia, and Taiwan. Each year some outstanding undergraduates and graduates are selected to further study in these universities. As one of the 22 Chinese Education Bases in China with the approval of Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council, the university has over 80 international students at present and has cultivated more than 1,000 overseas students so far.
A great many folks from home and abroad including the overseas Chinese of Hainanese origin and compatriots from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan have made donations worth as much as over 50 million Yuan to the university, helping the university improve its facilities including the constructions of office building, teaching building, library, academic center, gym, stadium and the school gate. They also donated large quantities of book materials and teaching equipment and provided scholarships, allowances for students as well as research funds for the construction of some key disciplines. All of which have accelerated the development of the university.
As the line “Ride the Wind and Cleave the Waves, Set the Sail to Cross the Sea” goes, Hainan University has decided to implement the two-step strategy in the next decade aiming at developing itself into a university supported by the national “Project 211”.  In the first step, the university will spend three years in integrating and optimizing its existing resources. In the second step, which will last for another seven years, the university will focus on developing and improving the university comprehensive strength to a higher level. After ten years’ effort, Hainan University will strive to be an internationally famed comprehensive teaching-research university supported by the national “211 Project” with distinctive features and strong comprehensive strength, occupying a leading place among the similar universities in China. While playing a leading role in Hainan’s economic development, the university will then become a major base for knowledge innovation, personnel training and social services.
