A Brief Introduction to LZMC
 
Luzhou Medical College (LZMC) was founded in 1951 and is a government university recognized by both the Chinese government and the World Health Organization. It was authorized by the Degree Committee of the State Council to confer master’s Degrees in 1993, and began to confer Doctor’s Degrees in 2002. It is one of the “Top 5 Model Universities in Electronic Education” in Sichuan Province. For more than 50 years, the college has trained 20,000 students, and has evolved into a large-scale college of teaching, medical care and scientific research. It is characterized for combining Traditional Chinese Medicine with Western Medicine in various ways and at different levels.
 
Education Scale
At present there are 13,416 students study in the university, including 294 international students, 503 postgraduate students, 11,876 graduate students and also some short-term international students. The international students come from south Asian countries and the Chinese students come from 29 provinces.
 
Majors and Specialties
Luzhou Medical College has 16 departments. It has 18 majors and 9 special directions, among which there are 8 key provincial majors, 2 provincial key institutes,2 provincial bases and 17 provincial key courses.
Master’s Degree majors: Pre-clinical Traditional Chinese Medical Combined with Western Medicine, oral Medicine, Clinical Traditional Chinese Medical Combined with Western Medicine, Physiology, Pathological Physiology, Internal Medicine and Surgery.
Undergraduate majors and directions: Clinical Medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Oral Medicine, Anesthesiology, Nursing, Medical testing, Material Medicine, Epidemiology, Medical Photography, Chinese Herbs, Neurology, Otolaryngology, and Medical English.
 
Facilities
The college library has 1,241,100 books and journals, and 120 electronic reading rooms. The campus network covers both campuses. The teaching buildings cover 162,334 square meters, the dormitories, 84,227 square meters, the canteens, 11,600 square meters, and the stadium, 69,386 square meters, including 1 swimming pool.
 
Affiliated Hospitals
The college has 3 affiliated hospitals, which are: the affiliated hospital of LZMC, the Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital of LZMC and the Dental Hospital of LZMC. There is also a nursing school, a pharmaceutical factory, 7 non-subordinating hospitals and 56 teaching hospitals which total 20,000clinical beds. The Affiliated Hospital of LZMC is a “National Class A-Grade tertiary care hospital”, and is one of the biggest and most advanced hospitals in Southwest China. It has 1,500 staff (300 are professors and associate professors) and 60 departments with 6447 clinical beds. The successful separating operation performed on a pair of Siamese twins in 2004 was the 1st case done in Sichuan.
Scientific Research
The college now has 13 provincial and national research institutes including the Vascular Medicine Institute, 4 provincial key specialties and 17 provincial key courses. “The Journal of Luzhou Medical College” is published both in China and abroad, and has an international CO-DEN code for document retrieval. Furthermore, it is certified by the State Science Ministry as one of the resource journals for natural science information statistics. Since 1993 the college has carried out 625 research programs, more than 1/4 of which have won awards of the ministry, the province and the city, and 12 were patented. 4,872 research papers have been published in various journals both nationally and abroad.
 
The college has established international exchange and cooperation relationship with 26 universities and institutes in 9 countries including Japan, Germany and the U.S.A. The college employs long-term foreign teachers to teach English language and medical subjects, and invites short-term visiting scholars to give guest lectures.

Study Expenses
Any international student should submit his/her tuition each semester or each school year. According to the related laws of PRC, international students shall not be employed during their stay for studies in China, and chances of work for financing one’s studies are also rare, so self-financed international students, before coming to China, should get ready for all the expenses in China.
