North China Electric Power University (NCEPU), founded in 1958 and designated by the State Council as a key university in China in 1978, is affiliated with the Ministry of Education and officially listed as one of the “211 Project” universities. NCEPU is composed of two respective campuses in Beijing and in Baoding, with its main campus in Beijing.
The Baoding campus covers an area of 40 hectares and Beijing campus covers an area of 53.33 hectares. NCEPU holds school buildings of 800,000 square meters and fixed assets of 2.1 billion, including 0.3 billion allocated to scientific and teaching facilities. The university library covers a collection of 1.5 million books. NCEPU possesses a high-quality teaching staff with a total number of 1,600 professional teachers, including 287 professors, 490 associate professors, and four academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Being open to students from all over China, the university has, at present, more than 35,000 full-time students, including 20,002 undergraduates and 6,276 post-graduates. For many years, NCEPU has enjoyed the graduates’ employment rate of over 96%.
NCEPU has greatly improved its academic programs and a complete educational system for bachelor’s, master’s and Ph.D. students has been firmly established. Currently, NCEPU maintains 54 bachelor’s programs, 52 master’s programs, 20 Ph.D. programs, 3 first-level disciplines authorized to confer Ph. D. degrees, 2 mobile stations of post-doctoral scientific research, 1 post-doctoral project workstation, 2 key disciplines at the national level, 13 key disciplines at the provincial and ministerial level, 10 key laboratories at the provincial and ministerial level, 1 research center for Beijing energy development, and some professional degree programs including Master’s Program of Business Administration and Master’s Program of Applied Engineering.
Since the “Tenth Five-year Plan,” NCEPU has undertaken 542 scientific projects at the national level from National Natural Science Fund, “863” Program and “973” Program. And 57 of these projects have won the Awards for Scientific and Technological Progress at the national, provincial and ministerial levels. In 2007, the scientific funds reached 240 million. In addition, the Science Park of NCEPU is designated as one of the National-level College Science Parks in China.
Actively promoting diverse international exchanges and cooperation from bachelor to master degrees, NCEPU has established cooperative ties with more than 60 distinguished universities and scientific institutions in Europe, North America and other parts of the world. More than 100 international students are currently studying on campus.
Through a long-term educational exploration, NCEPU has gradually formed its own striking features. Along with a series of distinctive and dominant disciplines, the academic discipline system to serve the power industry is firmly established. Facing the development of renewable energy in the world and focusing on new energy research, NCEPU is dedicated to setting up a new discipline system of “Extensive Power Concept” in order to improve the service for power industry, based on dominant disciplines and supported by the disciplines of liberal arts and sciences.
Featuring practice- and capability-oriented cultivation of professionals, NCEPU focuses its education on laying solid foundations, raising student capabilities, stressing innovation and comprehensive development, whose teaching system in engineering education is composed of four modules including basic experiment, intramural practice, simulation, and outside-campus engineering practice. As the cradle of senior electrical talents in China, NCEPU has fostered many outstanding graduates, some of whom have become the academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, senior technical and managerial talents in the power industry.
In the “Eleventh Five-year Plan”, NCEPU continues to carry out the idea of scientific development and the educational guideline, “Advancement through development of key disciplines, Improvement through talent recruitment, Revitalization through scientific research, and Prospering through highlighting strengths,” emphasizing quality-oriented cultivation of professionals and running a responsible university. By way of following the rules of education, meeting social demands, focusing on teaching characteristics, deepening the educational reform and implementing a leapfrog development, NCEPU will accomplish, within the following ten to fifteen years, the mission of building a state-of-the-art, multidisciplinary, internationalized and research-oriented university with international standing and distinctive characteristics.”
