The School of Management of Dalian University of Technology is the same entity as the National Center for Industrial Science and Technology Management Development (at Dalian) and was set up jointly by Chinese and American governments. The SMDUT, established in 1986, was composed of the Department of Management Engineering and the Institute of Systems Engineering. The academician Wang Zhongtuo was the first Dean of the School of Management. The National Center for Industrial Science and Technology Management Development (at Dalian) was established in 1980, along with the Department of Management Engineering. The Institute of Systems Engineering was authorized by the State Ministry of Education and founded in 1978. Dalian University of Technology is one of the first six universities to establish management education, and at the same time, it is one of the first institutions to have a school of management.
It was the first school to bring in advanced management concepts and methods used by developed countries (1980). It was the earliest to offer an MBA program (1984). In the last twenty-eight years, it has committed itself to providing entrepreneurs and senior executives with an education and training base which integrates advanced managerial concepts with China’s national economic development concepts; and blends knowledge with management training. Until now, it has had more than ten thousand graduates.
The disciplines set up by the School of Management include three fields of management, engineering and science, and involve five “level-1” and seventeen “level-2” Ministry of Education disciplines. Now it has a high-level academic team of one hundred and nine teachers, led by the academician Wang Zhongtuo. Included are: twenty six professors, forty four associate professors, and twenty eight doctoral supervisors.
As of September 2008, 3,017 students are registered on campus in SMDUT. Among them, there are 430 full-time undergraduate students, including eleven overseas students, 472 full-time master degree candidates, 1,202 Master Business Administration students, 291 Executive Master of Business Administration students, 170 Master of Engineering students, and 452 doctoral candidates.
So far, the School of Management has developed extensive cooperative relationships with universities in America, Canada, France, Holland, Japan, Australia, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macao. The cooperation includes academic exchanges, joint research programs and joint degree programs. The School of Management pays attention not only to the cultivation of students, but also to the development of young teachers. At the same time, not only the successful current development, but also the long-term development becomes the focus of attention. Therefore, the main task of the School of Management is to develop disciplines and enhance academic achievement.
