Shanghai University of Electric Power founded in 1951 is a full-time institution of higher learning; co-run by the central government and the Shanghai municipality, and managed mainly by the Shanghai municipality. Pingliang Campus, the main campus of the university, lies near Yangpu Bridge in the eastern urban district of Shanghai, over looking Pudong from the other side of Huangpu River. The university has both a quiet and a peaceful environment and has convenient transport facilities. The other campuses are respectively in Nanhui Science and Education Park and in the east Guoshun Road. At present, the whole covering area of the university is nearly one thousand Chinese mu. The university has now ten thousand full-time students. A large number of graduates are working on the mainstay posts of production, operation, and management in the electric power systems of China.
The university has established seven second-level colleges, namely the College of Energy and Environmental Engineering, the College of Electric Power and Automation Engineering, the College of Computer and Information Engineering, the College of Management and Humanity, the College of International Exchange, the College of Higher Vocational Technology, and the College of Adult Education, with three departments directly under the university, the Department of Mathematics and Physics, the Department of Foreign Languages and the Department of Physical Education. The university also has a Technology Center for Modern Education.
The university has 35 fundamental and professional labs and 12 research offices. Among them is the ministerial key laboratory of Corrosion and Protection of Thermal Power Equipment from the State Power Corporation of China. The major, power plant of thermal energy power and environment engineering, has been rated as the key cultivation of subjects for the Shanghai Educational Committee.
