Recommended reason | The Department of Materials Science and Engineering(DMSE), the direct subordinate department to the university, owns the “Institute of Rare Earth Science and Engineering”, and “Laboratory of Nano-metals Materials and Technology” jointly set up with Metals Institute of Chinese Academy of Science. It is also the pioneer of demonstration base for the combination of enterprise-college-research institute in training master students for new materials in JiangsuProvince as well as a member of “Center for Nano Science and Application Development of Jiangsu Province” and “Copper Product Research Center of Tongling City”.
The Teaching Staff
The Department possesses an excellent teaching staff, including: 1 academician of the Engineering Academy of China, 5 doctoral supervisors, 10 professors and 8 associate professors. 1 of them was chosen to enter the first group of “New Century Talents-supporting Plan” sponsored by the Ministry of Education; 3 are the members of “Project 333” of JiangsuProvince; and 1 is included in “Cyanine Project” of Jiangsu Provinces. At the same time, the School also possesses advanced modern facilities for preparation and characterization of materials, which serve as resources for researches on materials preparation and processing, characterization of composition, microstructure and properties.
Disciplinary Construction
The School offers a postdoctoral program in Materials Science & Engineering, master and doctoral programs in Materials Physics and Chemistry, Materials Science, and Materials Processing in addition to Engineering Master Degree in the area of materials engineering. Materials Science is a both national and ministerial key discipline, and Materials Science and Technology is one of the key construction disciplines in JiangsuProvince.
The Direction of Scientific Research
The research areas of mastersinclude materials physics and chemistry, materials structure and phase transformation, crystal growth and control, physical properties and their characterization, metal materials, Inorganic nonmetallic materials, advanced ceramics, composite materials, nano-materials, functional materials, controlled solidification and new materials, surface modification and films, special environment material behavior and its technology, advanced materials preparation and processing technology, advanced joining technology and process automation, arc welding robot application technology, computer application in materials science and engineering, special military materials and so on. 3 post doctors have finished their studies while 33 doctors, 69 masters and 18 masters of engineering still pursue their study in the school.
Scientific Research Situation
In recent years, this School has undertaken various research projects inMarch 1986 Hi-Tech Program, March 1997 Hi-tech Project, National Natural Science Foundation, National Defense Foundation, National Defense Research in Advance, International Technological Cooperation between China and Russia, fundamental researches and projects from enterprises. It had made remarkable achievements and formed the unique features in solidification and new materials, nano-materials and amorphous alloys, biomaterials, high temperature sealing materials, superplastic forming, cast iron, powder metallurgy, colored metallography, resistant welding and its control, etc. In recent years, the school has won 1 third prize of National Technology Advance Award, 3 second prizes and 9 third prizes of Provincial Technology Advance Award, and several patents.
International Exchange
The School has long-term scientific cooperation and joint graduate education programs with Oak Hill National Lab of U.S., University of Tennessee, University of George Washington, Stuttagart University of Germany, Russia Ufa State University of Aviation Technology, Baikov Research Institute of Russia, Central Materials Institute of Russia, the State-run University of Singapore, the Metal Research Center of China’s Science Academy, the State Key Laboratory of Solidification Technology in Northwestern Polytechnical University, the State Key Laboratory of New Metal Materials in Beijing University of Science and Technology , State Key Laboratory of Condense Mater Physics in Nanjing University, Tongling City in Anhui province, and Nanjing Iron and Steel Group.
