School of Education Science of Shanxi University (SESU), formerly known as the Education Department, was founded in 1929. According to the historical records from “The National Shanxi University”, the Education Department was from Shanxi Provincial College of Education that was incorporated into Shanxi University in July 1934, and the College of Education maintained its name in accordance with the executive instruction of the then Ministry of Education. In 1936 it became a part of the College of Liberal Arts of the university. During the World War II, the department of education moved to Shan Yuan and Qiu Lin in Shaanxi Province along with the university, and then moved to Peking. The college moved back to Taiyuan in April 1949. In 1950s and during the years of the so-called Culture Revolution, the department experienced the now-and-then suspension and dissipation. After the department was reorganized in 1980 it has undergone rapid development for the past 20 years. Since then, 2000 undergraduate students and 40 graduate students for master’s degree have graduated. The great contributions have been made to social and economic development of Shanxi Province. In 1999 the department was renamed as the School of Education.

At present, the school has three departments, the Department of Education, the Department of Psychology, and the Department of Pre-school Education. The school offers four master’s study programs in educational psychology, the higher education, the principal of education program, and the applied psychology. The four undergraduate study programs are school education, education administration, applied psychology, pre-school education and pedagogy. The school of education is characterized by its integration of graduate study, undergraduate study and three-year college education programs in the fields of both pedagogy and psychology. The school of education integrates teaching, research and social  service. The school is administrated under a series of rules and regulations for teaching, research, and students. The teaching quality is always the top priority and the instruction practices emphasize on student’s ability and skill development. The innovated teaching experiments are encouraged.

There are 32 faculty members in the department, including 3 full professors, 13 associate professors 9 lecturers and 7 teaching assistants. Four faculty members are with doctoral degrees and 23 with master degrees. Also 3 junior faculty are studying for doctor degrees.

The state-of-art teaching and research facilities include a reference room, a psychology laboratory and the expanding pre-school education laboratory. The reference room has more than 5000 volumes of books and 200 kinds of academic journals. More than 100 sets of experimental instruments are available in psychology laboratory. The pre-school education laboratory has 40 pianos or electric pianos with an extension of dance hall.

The faculty’s research projects are granted by the national, provincial and institutional research funds. Thirty research projects are ongoing in 2003. The faculty members have published more than 100 academic papers and ten textbooks or monographs. The project of "Experiment with Structure Transform in Primary School Mathematics Teaching" was funded by the National Education Commission. A complete set of experimental mathematics textbooks for primary schools, after strict assessment, has been approved by the National Primary and Middle School Textbooks Evaluation Committee. Its publication has been well received and put in use in schools of several provinces and autonomous cities in China.

The Shanxi University Art Teaching Center is affiliated to and administrated by the School of Education. The great progress has been made to facilitate students' development in arts and humanism. The Psychology Consulting Center is a university-entrusted institution providing psychological services to all the students in the university. In addition, since 1990 the school has been responsible for the university’s faculty development programs in educational theory and young faculty training. This program is also open to the public. More than 10,000 teachers have participated. The program was highly praised by the “North China Faculty Development Center” a branch institution of the Ministry of Education of China.

With 70-years of history, the School of Education is actively meeting the challenges from the new social development and knowledge economy in the 21 century. The school is taking more innovative efforts to ensure the top quality in both teaching and research.
