Selby clinches Masters at first attempt
LONDON (AFP) - England's Mark Selby joined snooker luminaries John Spencer, Doug Mountjoy, Terry Griffiths and Stephen Hendry on Sunday by winning the British Masters at his first attempt.
Selby trounced compatriot Stephen Lee 10-3 at the Wembley Arena and stormed to victory winning eight frames on the trot after briefly trailing 3-2.
The champion also recorded four century breaks in all, clinching the decisive frame with a clearance of 141, the joint highest break of the week-long tournament.
"I've been knocking on the door for a while. The world championship would have been nice last season, but to win the Masters is amazing," said 24-year-old Selby.
"It means the world to me to win this tournament. To win the Masters as my first title is a dream come true.
"I'm only 24, but this week I've felt like I was 40. The nerves obviously do get to me, but I didn't show them and I managed to play good snooker."
Lee paid tribute to Selby.
"The games have got harder all week long, but Mark played some good strong snooker," said the runner-up.
"I'm gutted I've lost, especially for the lots of people who have turned up to watch me. Hopefully there'll be a next time.
"I wanted to win this title for my good pal Paul Hunter, so hopefully I can still do that one day."
Mark Selby's sights on first title
Stephen Lee and Mark Selby will ensure a new Saga Masters champion is crowned at Wembley Arena tonight.
A tournament, second only in longevity to the World Championship, will host its 34th final featuring a Masters newcomer and an opponent who twice previously failed at the penultimate round.
The latter, world No 13 Lee, defeated Hong Kong's Marco Fu 6-2 in the second semi-final last night.
Selby, a runner-up to John Higgins in last season's World Championship, earlier knocked out Ken Doherty 6-5 after a four-hour marathon.
Indeed, the 'Jester from Leicester' has so far recorded deciding frame victories in each of his wins against Doherty, Stephen Maguire and Stephen Hendry.
In contrast, Trowbridge based Lee breezed into the final, 10 years after making his Masters bow.
However, his substantial frame, only marginally reduced by recent trips to the gym, ensured he repeatedly wiped sweat from his brow with a wet cloth throughout the contest.
And while Selby has played more frames physically he looks in better shape to go on and secure the £150,000 first prize.
Indeed, Selby has plenty of experience when it comes to protracted matches. At the UK Championship last December Selby and Fu were involved in a 77-minute frame-the longest ever recorded in front of the television cameras.
Now, the 2006 world eight ball pool champion hopes to have the staying power to capture a first ever major title.
"It means the world to me to reach the final - it feels like I'm on a roller coaster.
"There were plenty of nerves. I just thought in that last frame I wanted a chance and thankfully I got one."
Selby's success was celebrated by some new members of his supporters' club, soldiers from the Army Education Corps and Royal Engineers.
At the start of the tournament, World Snooker, the sport's governing body, donated 100 tickets to servicemen recently returned from Iraq and Afghanistan.
Selby met some of them and acknowledged:" It takes a lot of bravery to do what they're doing.
"I look up to people like that. It puts what I do into perspective, they are putting their lives on the line for us."
