Shantou University (STU), founded in 1981 with the approval of the State Council, is a key comprehensive university under the "211 Project" in Guangdong Province, and the only institution of higher education in the Chao-Shan area that has provided tens of thousands of local residents with higher learning. Its campus covers a total area of 1.28 square kilometers with the floor space comprising 406,000 square meters.

Shantou University has developed a variety of programs to train undergraduate, master’s and doctoral students, with 1 National Key Discipline (Pathology and Pathophysiology), 4 Guangdong Provincial Key Disciplines (Pathology and Pathophysiology, Fundamental Mathematics, Immunology and Pharmacology), 1 Post-doctoral program (Preclinical Medicine), 7 second level doctoral programs, 2 first level master’s programs, 47 second level master’s programs and the “Cheung Kong Scholar” professorship. It has established a number of centers and laboratories which conduct basic scientific research and directly serve the local economic development, including the Artificial Intelligence Manufacturing Technology Laboratory funded by the Ministry of Education, STU Division of National Key Discipline in Molecular Pathology, Research Institute of Tumor Pathology, Marine Biology Laboratory of Guangdong Province, Image-Processing Technology Key Laboratory of Guangdong Province, CAD/CAM Center, Laboratory for Wind Tunnel Testing, Laboratory for Structural Engineering, FMS Laboratory and Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Pattern Recognition.

In 2007, STU received a total funding of RMB 28.2 million for research projects, a 42.9% increase over the previous year. Among them, 4 were rated as the “National Projects of science and Technology”, 5 were under the “National Project 863”, and 30 were sponsored by National Natural Science Fund (NNSF). The academic staff published 157 SCI-indexed papers, another growth over 2005 and 2006 in terms of the number of papers indexed by SCI, EI and ISTP. Meanwhile the attitude towards published papers is beginning to shift from “quantity-oriented” to “quality-oriented”: 2 projects respectively gained 2nd Prize and 3rd Prize of the “Provincial Award for Scientific and Technological Achievements”. The University was approved as one of the first “Provincial Intellectual Property Pilot Institutions” by the Intellectual Property Office of Guangdong Province. According to the “2007 Chinese University Ranking in Scientific Innovation”, STU is ranked 53rd among all national colleges and universities and 14th among comprehensive universities.

Shantou University takes full advantage of the support from Li Ka Shing Foundation and the ties with overseas universities to strengthen academic exchange and cooperation. Distinguished scholars from first-class universities at home and abroad have been invited to give seminars or lectures to the undergraduate students, so as to broaden their academic horizon. Among those scholars are Nobel laureates Yang Zhenning, Li Zhengdao, Ding Zhaozhong, James Mirlees and Zhu Diwen, as well as other world-class celebrities including Chen Xingshen, Qiu Chengtong, Pan Yugang and He Dayi. Some famous scientists from well-known universities like Cambridge University and University of California at Berkeley (UCB) were also recruited as honorary professors, chair professors or adjunct professors to deliver academic lectures at the University.

Under the auspices of the Li Ka Shing Foundation, STU has become one of the few universities in mainland China that awards full scholarships to overseas exchange students. So far, the University has established close academic ties with nearly 20 universities in such countries as US, UK, France, Russia, Australia and Germany, etc., and launched exchange programs for undergraduate and graduate students.
