Elementary students drawing The American International School of Guangzhou (AISG) is an independent, coeducational day school. Its mission is to provide an exemplary education for the children of the expatriate community living in Guangzhou, through an internationalized American curriculum taught in the English language, which incorporates the best found in the United States and other international schools, so that our students become model world citizens of high character who can think effectively, analytically, creatively, and critically.
The outstanding staff of our parent-governed school, working in concert with our international community of students and parents, provides a challenging, dynamic environment for learning, characterized by high measurable standards, opportunities to grow and develop and a commitment to continuing reflection and improvement.
Our Students:
Total enrollment at AISG for the 2006-2007 school year is 785 students, and includes students from 33 nations of whom 22% were American, 18% were SAR Chinese, 15% were Korean, 10% were Canadian, 6% were from the United Kingdom, and 29% represented other countries. Students come from business, professional, and government families.
Academic Excellence:
One measure of the quality of a school is how its students do on standardized tests. Each year our students take Advanced Placement Tests, the International Baccalaureate exams, the SAT, the PSAT, and the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills depending on their grade level and interests.
The SAT is used for university admission in North America and other parts of the world. Students receive a verbal score and a mathematical score. When compared to the average SAT scores of students in America, ours are much higher. A more demanding comparison is with other international schools in our area, such as Singapore American School, the American School in Japan, Hong Kong International School, etc. When compared with the average of schools in our region (EARCOS - East Asian Regional Council of Schools), we do well.

Not pictured: Sean Kelly .The AISG Board of Governors has been authorized by the Articles of Association and the By-Laws to govern the school. The main functions of the school board are to hire a Director to oversee the day-to-day running of the school; create, approve and maintain policy; and see that the school is adequately financed to carry out its stated mission and objectives.
There are seven members of the Board of Governors. Four are elected from members of the AISG Parents' Association. They are elected for two year terms at the spring meeting of the Parent's Association. Membership in the latter is automatically conferred on the parents or guardians of children enrolled in the school. Three members are appointed: one by the US Consul, one by the other Consuls in Guangzhou and one by the Corporate Council.
Board meetings are held monthly, usually on the second Tuesday of the month. Meetings take place in the school library and members of the association are invited to attend. Agendas are published in the weekly bulletin the week before the meeting, and the minutes are available for reference in the library.
Copies of the School Board Policy Manual, including the Articles of Association and the By-Laws, are also available for review by association members in the library.
