Welcome to Glorious and Magnificent--Xiangguo Temple
Surrounded by burning incense and colorful flags, with its elegant bell ringing, Xiangguo Temple is a key place in exchanging Buddhist culture between China and foreign countries. Located in Kaifeng proper, Xiangguo Temple was first built in 555, the sixth year during Emperor Tianbao's reign of the Northern Qi period (550-577), but was destroyed in the late Ming Dynasty. After reconstruction, it has such structures as the Hall of Heavenly Kings, Mahavira Hall, Tripitaka Pavilion, and a statue of Goddess of Mercy with 1,000 hands and 1,000 eyes. On the eastern site of the main gate there is a 5-ton bell.  
 
History and Culture
The Xiangguo Temple has glorious history; it is one of famous Buddhism centers in ancient China. It is originally the former dwelling of Wuji, a famous person in of Wei, spring and Warring dynasty. In 555, the temple was begun to build, and it was first called as “Xiangguo Temple”, latter destroyed in the war. In The Tang dynasty (701 years), the Buddhist priest Huiyun came to Kaifeng and collected fund to build the temple by boasting the temple is of wonderful spirit. They called the temple Jianguo Temple, later in 712, Li Rui, the imperial of Tang dynasty changed the name of the temple into Xiangguo Temple and gifted the his own handwriting on the tablet to the temple to commemorate him to take a seat works as emperor by the king.
 
The temple reached its prosperity in the Tang and Song Dynasties. Especially in the Northern Song Dynasty time, Xiangguo Temple has been enlarged for several times and became the largest temple in the country. The entire temple occupies an area of 500 Chinese acres, governs 64 Zen temples, the law courtyards, and includes 1,000monks. After the Northern Song Dynasty, Xiangguo Temple has encountered the serious destruction; the later generations repaired the temple which was prosperous or decline. Now 's main construction of Xiangguo Temple are the Qing Dynasty relic, the layout is rigorous, the palace is grand with big space and palatial magnificent sight, firmly worthily for long standing reputation.
