The School of Chinese Language and Literature of Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU) is an oldest school with a long history which can be traced back to 1950s. In December, 1998, the School of International Exchange and School of Chinese Language and Literature have been merged, forming a new School of International Exchange. The new school was renamed as the School of Chinese Language and Literature in 2006.
The School takes Chinese Language & Literature and Chinese as a Foreign Language as its dominant teaching content. It covers the Department of Chinese Language & Literature, Department of Chinese as a Foreign Language and Chinese Language Training Center. It has a capacity of 6 offices and 3 institutes or research centers. There are over 75 full-time faculty members who are learned, experienced and devoted. This faculty includes 33 full professors and associate professors, together accounting for 44% of the faculty; while 11 of the faculty (including 3 doctorate candidates) are PhDs, 30 members have MA degrees, which together account for 58.6% of the whole faculty; 23 are from Chinese Language major, accounting for 32.9% of the faculty; 41 hold CFL Teaching Certificate, accounting for 58.6% of the total number; another 40 part-time teachers are invited when necessary. At the end of 2002, the total number of students at school was 1659, including more than 140 Chinese students, 893 foreign students on long-term programs, and 626 on short-term programs.
The School mainly offers bachelor’s programs and master programs for both domestic and international students, Chinese Language advanced studies or training for international students and public courses for the whole university. It covers a Bachelor’s degree programs including Chinese Language & Literature and Chinese as a Foreign Language, and 2 Master’s degree programs covering Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, Comparative Literature & World Literature with various research orientation. The School has a good learning atmosphere and attaches great importance to scientific research.

Application time
For Chinese Language majors’ applicants, the deadline for applying Bachelor’s degree is Jan 10th for the spring semester, July 10th for the autumn semester. The deadline for dual language applicants is July 10th. The deadline for applying Master’s degree is July 10th.
For Non-Chinese Language majors’ applicants, the deadline for admission is Feb 28th.

For Bachelor’s degree:
Above 18 years old, senior high school graduate, HSK3 certificate (Chinese Language Major) /HSK6 certificate (Non-Chinese Language Major), in good health.
For Master’s degree:
Have Bachelor’s degree or above, HSK9 certificate (Chinese Language Major)/ HSK8 certificate (Non-Chinese Language Major), and Qualification Affirmed.
For Doctoral degree:
Have Master’s degree or above, HSK9 certificate (Chinese Language Major)/ HSK8 certificate (Non-Chinese Language Major), and Qualification Affirmed..
