The school at Renmin University of China (RUC) was established in the year of 1998, which combined the department of economics, the department of international economics and the institute for economic research as a whole. The history of the school could be traced back to 1946, when the North-China United University, the predecessor of RUC, set up the department of finance and economics, which was renamed as the department of economics in 1947. After the University was renamed as RUC, the department was restructured in 1956, with the addition of world economics section in the next year. Professor Song Tao held the post of the head of the Department and then the honorary head. Professor Wu Dakun led the world Economics section. Currently, Professor Yang Ruilong has been serving as the dean for the school of economics.
The science of economics at Renmin University of China has enjoyed high reputation in the country. The school of economics was among the first ones to confer master degree and doctoral degree in political economy, national economics, and world economics, to host post-doctoral studies in economics, to establish "the Training Center of Economic Talents", which triumphantly ranked as No.1 overall in the country. The institute of China’s reform and development, as an affiliate of the school, is on the list of the "A Hundred National Research Bases of Humanity and Social Science", and was among the first ones to confer PhD degree with a major in theoretical economics in the country. In a review on teaching and research quality assessment conducted by the Ministry of Education in 2002, the school’s subjects of political economy, western economics, and national economics were listed as "the National Fundamental Subjects", with the first two ranked on the top.
Renmin University of China is recognized throughout the country for laying the cornerstone and building up theoretical economics system of China. With an outstanding faculty team, which is well balanced age-wise, the school of economics is an important foundation for economic teaching and research in the country. Among its faculty members, there are 34 full professors, with 27 of them eligible to advise PhD students. Together, the faculty members have yielded a large amount of researches with high quality and important influences. Overall, they have made significant contributions to maintaining Marxist economic theory, introducing foreign economics thinking and modern western economics theories into China, creating China’s discipline system of world economics, exploring the theories and policy proposals for China’s reform and opening up, and training students to be academically talented and practically skilled. With those efforts, the school maintains its leading position in economics teaching and research in the country.
The school of economics maintains wide and effective academic connections with many leading universities in Europe, America, Japan and Australia. The school is privileged to have Dr. Joseph Stiglitz, Dr. Robert Mundell, Dr. Gregory C. Chow, and Dr. Lawrence J. Lau among others as honorary professors, and some reputed economists in the country such as Fu Shan, Huan Fanzhng, Cao Yuanzheng, and Wei Wei as adjunct professors. In the meantime, the school keeps favorable relations with many banks, security firms, universities and research institutes.
