The School of Civil Engineering at Southwest Jiaotong University has a long history which can be traced back to the year 1896 when its precursor-School of Shanhaiguan Railway Officials was found. At that time, it just owned the Department of Civil Engineering and began to enroll students in 1897. It was regarded as the earliest department of Civil Engineering which in turn SWJU had been an important cradle of higher education of Civil Engineering. In 1990, the School was ready to establish with merging the departments, institutes and centers of Civil Engineering, Geology and measuring. And it factually began to work in 1996.
The School is composed of 7 departments including Road & Railway Engineering, Bridge Engineering, Underground Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Geological Engineering, and Measuring Engineering, 4 teaching and research sections including Calligraphy, Architectural Materials, Structural Mechanics, and Water Mechanics, 4 laboratory centers of Structure Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Wind Engineering and Centrifuge of Civil Engineering, and Institute of Architectural Surveying & Designing. There are 2 key national disciplines, 1 key discipline at provincial level, and 2 mobile post-doctoral stations. Currently, it owns a number of 312 faculty members, including 66 professors with 55 doctoral supervisors, and 53 associate professors.
It covers 3,100 undergraduate students, 1690 graduate students and over 1000 students under adult education. At present, it pays more attention to strengthen the students' comprehensive quality and ability, trying to explore high level talents cultivation. The School adheres to academic exchange domestically and internationally and it has a close relationship or corporation with many universities and enterprises from home and abroad. It has made great achievements on academic exchange, talents cultivating, cooperative research and school running jointly.

Application time
For Bachelor’s degree, the deadline for application is June 30. The academic year begins on September 1.
For Master’s degree & Doctoral degree, the deadline for application is December 31. Usually, the first semester is from Sep 1 to Jan. 15. The second is from February to July.
Entry requirements
For Bachelor’s degree: the applicants should have senior high school diploma, academic records, in good health and HSK4 certificate.
For Master’s degree: the applicants should Bachelor’s degree or above, recommended by two associate professors or above, academic records, in good health and HSK4 certificate.
For Doctoral degree:the applicants should have Master’s degree or above, academic records, recommended by two associate professors or above, in good health and HSK4 certificate.
