The history of the School of Chinese and Literature can be traced back to the Chinese Division of Shanxi Grand School, the former name of Shanxi University used in 1902 when it was founded. The School of Chinese and Literature is a result of the integration of the former Department of Chinese Language and Literature and the Institute of Chinese Ancient Literature in 2001.
With a tradition of a hundred years long the School of Chinese and Literature serves as the education and research base of Chinese language education and research with a total of 7000 students graduated. At present the School offers undergraduate programs of Chinese Literature, Journalism, Movie and TV drama Scripts Studies, and Advertisement Studies with 1300 students; and 100 master’s students are in the field of ancient Chinese literature, Chinese linguistics and characters, and ancient literature and reference studies.
The teaching goal is to satisfy the individual needs of each student, to ensure the students lay a solid foundation in fundamental Chinese language, to offer high quality training in application fields, and to seek a balance between general education and specialty development. A series of school scholarships and awards have been available to enhance the students’ motivation to study in a diligent way and to encourage faculty teaching improvement, such as "ZHI-DONG" Scholarship and "DE-YI" Scholarship.
The School of Chinese and Literature is featured by its classical tradition and academic excellence. The affiliated institutes are the Institute of Ancient Chinese Literature, Institute of Chinese Dialects, Institute of Comparative Literature, the Center of World Literature, and the Center of New Literature. The study of Ancient Chinese Literature is the key academic discipline designated as the by Shanxi Province. Among 56 faculties are 14 professors and 20 associate professors. In recent years, the emerging young and middle-aged scholars have been playing the major roles in both teaching and research.
The School is equipped with excellent teaching and research facilities including the Mass Media Laboratory, Movie and TV Drama Studio, Newspaper Compilation System. The total laboratory area is 500 square meters with the instruments of RMB2.6 million in value, which are used for teaching and learning in movie making, photography, compilation and editing, etc. The 130-square-meter-large reference room has more than 25,963 books, 350 journals and 350 kinds of audio and video materials. The unique Student Book Base of Shanxi province has 1671 books with annual increase of 300 books. The reference room of the Institute of Ancient Chinese Literature has more than 20,000 kinds of books.
In the recent 10 years the faculty members has finished 28 textbooks and published 35 research works. A number of research areas are unique in China.
