The School of Philosophy and Sociology at Shanxi University was founded in 1980. During the past 20 plus years it has developed into a leading academic institution of education and research in the field of philosophical studies in China. The department offers a doctoral study program in philosophy of science and technology, and five mater’s programmes in Marxist philosophy, foreign philosophy, philosophy of science and technology, ethic studies, and sociology. The undergraduate majors are philosophy and sociology. The students in the major of philosophy, which is also the designated humanity education base by Shanxi University, enjoy the priority of being recommended to graduate study without entrance examinations. The study of philosophy of science and technology is also the designated national key discipline.
The School of Philosophy and Sociology is featured by its excellent faculty team and the stare-of-art teaching and research facilities. It has 10 full professors and 6 associate professors; two are eligible for advising Ph.D. students and 11 eligible for advising Master’s students. Professor Guo Guichun is also a member of Ph.D. advisory group of Chinese Academy of Social Science. The school houses a reference room with 30,000 volumes of book and more than 2,000 kinds of journals. The multi-purpose teaching laboratories are equipped with computers, projectors, printers, cameras, video cameras, recorders and other photography facilities.
The school offers 80 courses. So far a total of 105 graduate students, 1717 undergraduate students have graduated from the department, along with 1000 plus students having finished their curriculum requirements in graduate study classes. More than 30% of undergraduates pursue graduate studies upon graduations. The students are encouraged for critical analysis and creative thinking. As a result the department is known for its best teaching quality and excellent academic atmosphere.
The research in the philosophy of science is in a leading position in China with international reputation. Other study fields like the realism of contemporary science, the realism at post-modern era and the Marxist philosophy are up to the frontier in China. Since 1991, the faculty members have been successfully awarded with 9 national research grants and 25 provincial research grants; published 40 works and 600 journal papers; and won more than 30 academic awards.
The present guideline of the department is to “strengthen foundation, promote applications, emphasize research, pursue efficiency, enhance management and elevate quality”, under which the department is in an endeavor of upgrading its teaching and research.
