Since 1896, Sichuan University has had the Department of Chinese Language and Literature. Established in August 1998, College of Literature and Journalism of Sichuan University is a merger of the former Department of Chinese Language and Literature and College of Journalism. The college consists of 5 departments as well as 10 research institutes. Now it has 134 staff members, 46 professors, 29 associate professors and 29 tutors for doctoral candidates.
The College aims to be an advanced research college and to train excellent talents for society. It has already formed a complete system covering undergraduate courses, graduate programs, Ph.D programs and post-doctorial programs. There are 14 specialties for doctorial candidates(Theory of Literature and Arts, Chinese Classics, Contemporary Chinese Literature, Chinese Classics Philology, Chinese Linguistics, Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, Linguistics and Literature of Chinese Minorities, Comparative Literature and World Literature, Literature Theory and Media, Cultural Criticism, Literature Anthropology, Buddhist Language and Literature, and Literary Theory of Broadcast TV and Film Literature, Journalism),1 post-doctorial station for Chinese Language and Literature,15 specialties for Master ‘ s degree including Journalism and Communication,6 specialties for Bachelor ‘ s degree(Chinese Language and Literature, Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, Journalism, Broadcasting and TV News, Advertising, Editing and Publishing).
Among the disciplines, there are 2 national key disciplines(Comparative Literature and World Literature, Chinese Classics Philology),2 provincial key ones and 1"211 National Project" key discipline. There is also a "985 Project" National Innovation Research Base, a National-level Personnel Training and Scientific Research Base for fundamentals of liberal arts and a Provincial Undergraduates Training and Scientific Base. Now the college has about 1,182 doctorial candidates and postgraduates and 1,169 undergraduates. The students’ occupational direction always focuses on the secretarial, managerial works and cultural promotion in departments of party and government; they are also more likely to work in those cultural departments, news or publishing organizations.
College of Literature and Journalism has achieved great progress in the field of education and research. Since 1998, the teachers have undertaken more than 40 national and provincial programs, published a large quantity of academic works and papers, and originated 6 academic journals in succession. The college also emphasizes much on academic communication and cooperation home and abroad. Meanwhile, College of Literature and Journalism have established friendly cooperative ties with over 10 world-famous universities of U.S.A, U.K, Germany, France, Russia, Japan, South Korea, Singapore and other countries and regions.
