Lingnan (University) College of Sun Yat-sen University was named after Lingnan University, which was first founded in Guangzhou in 1888. By 1930s, Lingnan University had enjoyed prestigious reputation both at home and abroad, with academic links with many famous universities worldwide. In 1952, as a result of the reorganization of all the universities in China, departments of Lingnan University were incorporated into Sun Yat-sen University and other universities. In December 1987, Lingnan (University) College of Sun Yat-sen University was established with the approval of the Ministry of Education of China.
Currently there are 7 departments in Lingnan, which are Department of Economics, Department of Finance, Department of Risk Management & Insurance, Department of Public Finance & Taxation, Department of International Business, Department of Business Management and Department of Logistics Engineering and Management. The undergraduate programs of economics, finance, public finance and taxation, international business and trade, insurance and logistic management were among the hottest programs in the province. In 2007, the admission mark for these programs ranked top 8 in Guangdong Province.
L(U)C has a total of 91 full-time teaching staff, among which 26 are professors and 34 associate professors, including 23 doctoral supervisors. 73% of the faculty has doctor’s degree and 80% of them have been to Harvard University, MIT, University of Minnesota, Cornell University of the U.S., and University of London of U.K. for research, further study, or for curriculum enhancements.
Since 2000, Lingnan faculty members have published 1214 theses on major academic periodicals, and they are currently undertaking 45 national research projects and 96 provincial research projects.
The Department of Economics has the longest history since the establishment of both Lingnan University and Sun Yat-sen University.
The Department is currently offering undergraduate programs in economics, graduate programs in political economics, modern economics, quantitative economics, regional economics, population, resource and environmental economics, and Ph.D. programs in world economy and modern economics.
The Department now has 19 faculty members, out of which 5 are professors (including 3 doctorial supervisors), 8 associate professors, 5 lecturers and 1 assistant professor. We have 10 doctoral degree holders and 4 of the faculty are currently studying for Ph. D degree. Seventy percent of the faculty has international study or research backgrounds. Areas of research include development economics, theories of enterprises and institutional economics, regional economics, and population, resource and environmental economics.
