The precursor of School of Chemical Engineering and Environment is the chemical engineering department of Yan’an Natural Science College which was founded in 1940. Afterwards it had experienced many changes. In 1952 it was renamed as “Chemical Engineering Department of Beijing Institute of Technology”. To adapt to the reform demand, it was ratified as “School of Chemical Engineering and Materials” by the Machine & Electricity Ministry in January 1991. To meet the need to construct a first –class university, it became “School of Chemical Engineering and the Environment of Beijing Institute of Technology” in July 2002.
The School has 64 faculty and staff members, including 7 supervisors for doctorate program, 11 professors and 29 associate professors. Of the 64 members, 90% teachers are younger than 50 years old; 29 teachers have doctorate degrees, which is 54% of the faculty. To strengthen the teaching and research ability, the School has established many laboratories such as “The Lab of Chemical engineering principle”, “The Lab of Industry Automatization”, and so on.
There are three departments in the School: Department of Chemical Engineering, Department of Applied Chemistry, Department of Environment and Energy. The School also set up “Ecosystem Industry Institute”, “R & D Center for Pharmaceuticals” and “R & D Center for Fine Chemicals”. Based on the discipline of “Applied Chemistry” the School of Chemical Engineering and the Environment takes “Green Energy Source” as its distinguished feature, and “Pharmaceutical Engineering and Technology” as construction focus, all the disciplines are developing harmoniously. The School has built an integrated system of teaching and scientific research, in which “Applied Chemistry” is a national key discipline, which measures up to world advanced standard.
The School lays stress on academic exchanges and has cooperation with famous universities in the world. The School exchanges visiting scholars with universities of the U.S.A., Britain, Germany, France and Italy. For example, a jointed program for Bachelor is being carried out by BIT and the University of Cottbus in Germany, and there are also Master’s and Doctorate programs with British Queen’s University and Italian Parma University.
