The School of Physics and Telecommunication engineering was renamed in July 2003, containing its predecessor -- physics department (established in 1951, one of the earliest founded department in the university )-- and telecommunication engineering department. It is one of the largest school in the university. Currently, the total number of enrolled students is more than 1600 , including the three-year and four-year college students and the graduates. The School now has 106 talented and experienced faculty members, including 16 professors, 29 associate professors.

The school is divided into the department of physics, electronic engineering department, communication engineering department, material science department and network technique center, experiment center, quantum research institute, applied physics institute, photon research institute, multimedia technology institute , science education institute , intellectual science and education company. Undergraduates in the school of physics and telecommunication study in 5 majors: physics, electronic science and technology, communication engineering , material science and science education. Students also have the option of continuing their studies to pursue master's degree in optics , microelectronics and solid electronics , course and teaching theory, condensed matter physics , circuits and systems , education, etc. and to pursue doctor's degree in optics, microelectronics and solid electronics. course and teaching theory. Aiming to help students to accumulate a wide and firm base of knowledge, and to improve their experimental techniques and independent research abilities , the school is on its way to integrate teaching and research., harmoniously . The graduates will be teachers and researchers for high schools, colleges and universities, various research institutes and enterprises.

The key laboratories in the school are : open modern physics technology laboratory in Guangdong province , high-level demonstration centre for fundamental physics experiment, provincial electronic information science and technological teaching laboratory , advanced photoelectric technology and systems laboratory , plasma nanometer material laboratory etc., which could meet demands of both teaching and research . At present, the whole staff are endeavored to build a high-level teaching & research school which has its own characteristic
