The school was founded on May 9, 2002. It was renamed after the then Department of Resources Development. It has a staff of more than 50. There are one National Engineering Counsel member, one endowed professor of Yongtze River Award, two Young Science and Technology Award winner, 13 PhD degree supervisor, 23 professors or equivalents, and 28 staff with a PhD degree. It has 7 research institutes and the affiliated company Changsha Golders Ltd..
The school offers three Bachelors degree programs of Mining and Geotechnical Engineering, Underground Space Engineering, and Safety and Health Engineering. Mining Engineering is a national focal point program. Mines Engineering programs are first class programs that offer PhD and postdoctoral fellowships. The following four programs offer PhD and Masters degrees: Mining Engineering, Safety and Health Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering and Underground Space. In 1999, it won the Yongtze River Award of the Ministry of Education.
The school has set up international cooperative research relationship with domestic and foreign universities and scientific research institutions. A number of famous scholars have been invited to visit the school. Over 20 teachers were sent abroad doing high level researches.
At present, the student population in SRSE includes 630 full-time students, among which are 71 doctoral candidates, 86 master candidates and 473 undergraduates. The quality of undergraduates cultivation has made much improvement and become a priority base for high-level talents cultivation. The rate of employment of undergraduates following graduation from SRSE exceeds 98% in these years, and that of passing post-graduate entrance exam is 40%. Numerous post-graduates and undergraduates study abroad after graduation and doctors become the central figures in a wide range of fields－some are in trade, some are senior officials, some are prestigious experts. In order to stimulate students’ devotion to the Sci-Tech causes, SRSE awards prize-“Kaituo Prize”, including “SME Prize”, “Diamond Prize” and so on.
Facing the future, the staff of our school are taking efforts to make contribution to the construction of our country and make our school an advanced school in the country and the world.
