Located to the east of the prosperous region of Xujiahui, the Shanghai Medical College of Fudan University boasts a long history and a rich heritage of learning and scholarship. As a result of China's on-going optimization of its educational system, Fudan University (established in 1905) and Shanghai Medical University (established in 1927) merged in the April of 2000 to be a more comprehensive institution of higher education. On July 27th, 2001 Shanghai Medical College, Fudan University was established, with Professor Wang Wei-ping, a Vice-president of Fudan University, as its Dean.
The school has first-class teachers troop, both one batch in domestic and foreign enjoy the high reputation, the academic attainments are deep, medical skill exquisite older generation experts and professors, and has the middle-aged academic backbone which grew rapidly in recent years. Among them there are 2 Chinese Academy of Science academician, 4 Chinese Academy of Engineering academician, 10 Ministry of Education Yangtze River professors, and 10 national outstanding youth science fund winners.
In addition there are existing postgraduate candidate teachers 249, master's degree students’ teachers 451. In order to maintain stable, deeply work, the clinical medicine teachers troop, the clinical teaching professors of the school both affiliate the post co-operation system, there are co-operation teaching teachers 554, teaching professors 204 people, teaching associate professors 206 people, assistant professors 144 people. In recent years, the Shanghai Medical school co-operate with Harvard University Medical school, the US Columbia University Medical school, the Australian Sydney University Medical school, Holland University of Groningen Medical school, Sweden Umea University Medical school, the Canadian Great Britain Columbia University, Japan Osaka University, Hong Kong University Li Jiacheng the Medical school, the Chinese University of Hong Kong Medical school and so on, carries on the scientific research item cooperation, the scholar visits the exchange mutually, the young teachers take advanced courses of the study.
Today, the College has twenty national key disciplines, one national key laboratory, and eight key disciplines to be further constructed in Project 211, nine key laboratories under the supervision of the Ministry of Education or the Ministry of Health, two municipal key disciplines and eight Shanghai Clinic Medical Centers. It has four research stations that offer postdoctoral fellowships, twenty-nine doctoral programs and thirty-six master programs.
