The Faculty of Asian Languages and Cultures (FALC) was established in January 1997 on the basis of the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures of the former Guangzhou Institute of Foreign Languages. In total there are 8 teaching and research departments and institutions affiliated to the Faculty of Asian Languages and Cultures, namely:
Department of Japanese;
Department of Thai;
Department of Indonesian---Malaysian;
Department of Vietnamese;
Department of Korean;
Teaching and Research Center for Uncommonly Used Languages (National level);
Research Center of Japanese;
Research Center of South-East Asia.
Apart from the Korean major, which was only approved in 2002, the 4 other majors enjoy a long history of 34 years. Over this long period, great achievements have been made in the development of each major and the faculty has become more influential both at home and abroad.
Currently the faculty has a staff of 71 (62 teachers, 7 members for political work and 2 tutors). As many as 673 students are studying for a Bachelor's degree (512 as Japanese majors, 161 as other majors), 43 for a Master's degree and 2 for a Doctor's degree. Since the merger of Guangzhou Institute of Foreign Languages and Guangzhou Institute of Foreign Trade in June 1995, the number of graduates in various majors of the faculty totals 693.
