The School of Material Science and Engineering was made up of some majors of the former department of electric engineering material and department of material science and engineering. This school has set up polymer material department, metallic material department, material forming and control engineering department, non-metallic inorganic material department, material analysis and test center and nearly 20 research institutes and research laboratories. Currently, the school has 89 teaching and administrative staffs, 1 is selected by the new century talents engineering, 7 are doctoral tutors, 34 are master’s tutors, 25 have been conferred the doctoral degrees and 22 are doctoral students. There are now 1,767 undergraduate students and 188 graduate students at school.
Now, this school has 4 undergraduate programs (polymer material and engineering, metallic material engineering, material forming and control engineering and non-metallic inorganic material engineering). The material science discipline has the right to confer doctoral and post-doctoral programs. Besides, this university has 5 master’s degrees (material science, material processing engineering, chemistry and physics of polymers, materials physics and chemistry, high voltage and insulation technology). Besides, it has the right to confer the master’s degree of the material engineering field and master’s degree of material science teachers in university.
The School of Material Science and Engineering has good conditions for teaching, and scientific research. It is equipped with many large-scale instrument and equipment, such as scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffractometer, FT-IR spectrograph, digital metaloscope, direct-reading spectrometer, gel permeation chromatograph, etc. All these bring advantage for the scientific research and personnel training.
The School of Material Science and Engineering pays attention to the academic exchanges and cooperation with the institutions both at home and abroad. It has established close academic exchanges and long-term cooperative relations with lots of universities and research institutions from Japan, Britain, Holland, Germany, Italy, Australia, etc. And it has employed internally famous experts to work as visiting professors of the school. It has also sent a lot of teachers abroad for visit and cooperative research. In order to serve the local economy, the school has established good cooperative relationships with some enterprises of Heilongjiang Province, such as China Aluminum Network, Hafei Group, etc.
Since 2003, the school has undertaken over 110 scientific research projects of all kinds, of which, one has won the first prize of national prize for progress in science and technology, one has won the second prize of national prize for progress in science and technology, 7 have won the second prize at provincial and ministerial level, 6 have won the third prize at provincial and ministerial level and 10 have patents. Now, it is undertaking 10 projects which are financed by state natural sciences fund and over provincial and municipal subjects. The total value of the contract is 13,646,000 yuan.

For international students, the academic year begins in September. The duration for application is from March 1st to June 30th.
