The School of Science at NPU is a research-based, multidisciplinary school mainly focused on science and applied science. It is comprised of the Department of Applied Mathematics, the Department of Applied Physics and the Department of Applied Chemistry. It has five key laboratories, six research centers and two Shaanxi Province Experimental Teaching Demonstration Centers. At present, the school offers nine undergraduate degree programs, 19 Master’s degree programs and seven Ph.D. programs. Among the Ph.D. programs, Materials Physics and Chemistry is evaluated as State Key Discipline.
The School of Science has 178 academic staff, including: one member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, three Chair Professors of “Cheung Kong Scholars Program”, three winners of National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, and more than 100 professors and associate professors. At present, there are more than 1,400 undergraduates and 700 graduates studying in the School of Science. They are guided to achieve an “excellent personality, excellent ability and excellent health” and to concentrate on specialty learning and training. In the past five years, more than 4,000 students have received their degrees. Four doctors are located at the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation of Germany.
In the School of Science, multi-disciplinary research is conducted regarding Space Materials Science, Smart Materials Science, Optical Information Technology, Computing mathematic, Analysis on Nonlinear Stochastic Dynamic Systems, Applied Probability and Statistics, Functional Polymer Materials, Resin Matrix Reinforced Composites, High-performance Plastic and Processing Engineering. Over the past five years, more than 1,400 papers have been published in high quality journals (SCI/EI/ISTP). The achievements of acoustic levitation research published on Phys. Rev. Lett. were reviewed in Science And Nature. High Undercooling and Rapid Crystal Growth of Liquid Metals and Alloys Research achievement in 2003 was awarded the Second Class Prize of the National Natural Science Awards of China.
