Founded in 2000, the School of Literature is composed of the Department of Chinese Language and Literature, the Department of Oriental Arts, the Department of Mass Communication, the Department of Art Design, the Division for Cultural Education, and attached to it are five research centers: the Institute of Ancient Chinese Culture, the Chinese Graphemes Research Center, the Vocabulary and Lexicology Research Center, the Comparative Linguistics Research Center, the Oriental Aesthetic Culture Research Center and Color and Public Art Research Center. The school is equipped with first-rate educational facilities for academic research.
Corresponding to “liberal arts” discipline, three first-level disciplines were installed at the School of Literature in 1999, namely Chinese Language and Literature, Mass Communication and Art Design. At present, School of Literature consists 10 disciplines entitled to confer doctoral degrees (2 of which were established individually), and 16 disciplines entitled to confer master’s degrees. In 2001, a post-doctorial mobile station was installed.
Known for its strong staff structure, the School of Literature currently has 98 teachers, including 45 professor, 35 associate professors 14 lecturers, and 4 teaching assistants, among whom 28 are doctoral candidate advisors. The teaching and research achievements in the School of Literature over the last five years are very remarkable. More than 40 scientific and research projects of national level, provincial and ministerial level were undertaken, and over 50 national and provincial awards were presented for achievement of scientific research produced by the faculty.
The school enrolls over 600 undergraduate students, over 350 graduate students, including more than 80 foreign students. The School runs its own scholarships besides those supported by Nankai University. All of these scholarships are offered to the outstanding undergraduates and part of postgraduates. The overall academic quality of the students is outstanding, about 37% undergraduates have opportunities to continue study for MA degrees in 2004, and all of the graduates look forward to successful futures in their employment.

Application time
For undergraduate program, the application period is between 15th March and 15th April. In College of Chinese Language and Culture, the deadline for Spring Semester is January15.
For Master’s program and Doctorate program, the application period is between 1st March and 31st March.
Entry requirements
For undergraduate program, the applicants should be in good health condition and 18 years old or above. They should also hold a HSK Level 6.
For Master’s program, the applicants should have hold a Bachelor’s Degree and a HSK Level 6.
For Doctorate program, the applicants should be in good health condition and 18 years old or above, They should also hold a Master’s Degree and HSK Level 6.
