Philosophy has been studied at Nankai University since the foundation of the University in 1919. The discipline of Philosophy was removed in 1952 due to the national policy of the time on adjusting the higher education system. Resumed in 1958 as a field, Philosophy was incorporated in 1960 into the then Department of Political Economics. Philosophy attained its independent status in 1962, when the Department of Philosophy was formerly established. Since then the Department has been hospitable to different ways of philosophical thinking. In 1994, because of its excellent performance in teaching and research, the Department was authorized by the State Educational Commission (now the Ministry of Education) as one of the National Bases for the Training and Research in Humanities and Social Sciences. During the course of its development, the Department has created an open and pluralistic academic environment that it purses to maintain, and becomes one of the leading institutions in doing philosophy in Mainland China.

The Department has the official status of a faculty. Though retaining its name of the “Department of Philosophy”, the department is not a sub-section of an overarching faculty, but an independent faculty. The organizational structure is thus the same as that of the other 21 Faculties of Nankai University. The Department is comprised of eight academic divisions: Marxist Philosophy, Chinese Philosophy, Logic, Western Philosophy, Ethics, Aesthetics, and Religious Studies. Each of the faculty members is affiliated to one of the eight divisions according to his/her specialties. It also is home to three affiliated research centers: the Institute of Social Philosophy, the Center for the Studies in Chinese Philosophy, and the Center for the Studies in Religion and Culture.

It aims to familiarize students with philosophical traditions, East and West, as well as to equip them with interpretative, analytical, and critical skills. Apart from offering a wide variety of courses and seminars at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, more than forty scholars are actively involved in one or several areas of research, including Marxism, Chinese Philosophy, Logic, Western Philosophy, Ethics, Aesthetics, Religious Studies, and Philosophy of Science and Technology.
