Grown out of the former Department of Marine Chemistry, the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering of Ocean University of China was founded in 1959, and was the first approved nationwide to confer Master and PhD degrees on marine chemistry. After nearly fifty years’ development, the college has currently 3 departments and an institute with a total number of more than 80 faculty and staff members. Among them there are an Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, a nationally recognized famous teacher, 20 professors, 13 associate professors, and 11 Ph.D. supervisors. The college has over 800 registered students, including 300 Doctoral or Masters degree students, and over 550 undergraduate students.
Marine Chemistry in this College is a national key discipline and a key construction discipline for “Project 211” and "Project 985". The college is now offering 2 Ph. D programs in Marine Chemistry and Marine Chemical Engineering and Technology, 7 Master programs in Marine Chemistry, Applied Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and . The college owns a provincial key laboratory as Marine Physical Chemistry, a Qingdao Key Laboratory as Marine Fine Chemicals and an Education Key Laboratory as Marine Chemical Theorems & Marine Chemical Engineering. The research facility with a total value of more than 22 million RMB is adequate for cruise survey, on-site experiments, laboratory analysis and numerical modeling. In the last decades, the college has also provided the nation with large numbers of high level experts in marine chemistry and related fields.
The college is also taking the lead over the nation in the research field of marine chemistry. In some aspects, such as the interfacial adsorption theory for marine physical chemistry and the material flux theory for estuary biogeochemistry, the researches in this college are internationally recognized and renowned. In the last 5 years, more than 100 research projects with a total funding amount of 30 million RMB have been granted to researchers in the college. More than 500 research papers have been published in academic journals, among which approximately 200 were cited in SCI or EI. Fifteen invention patents have been issued to the college, and more than 10 books have been published.
The college is taking active part in the domestic and international cooperation and competition, striding forward to the goal of being an internationally well-known college in the field of Marine Chemistry.
