Founded in 1923, the College of Life Science and Technology has its origin in Department of Aquaculture, Jiangsu Provincial Fisheries School. The college has 4 disciplines, namely, Aquaculture, Aquatic Biology, Marine Biology and Aquatic Environmental Science. Besides, it has established the Key Open Laboratory of Aquatic Genetic Resources and Aquaculture Ecology of the Ministry of Agriculture, the Key Open Laboratory of Aquatic Genetic Resources Excavation and Utilization jointly constructed by the university, the Municipality and the Ministry of Education, the Bank of Aquatic Animals and Plants Pathogens of the Ministry of Agriculture, Aquaculture E-Institute of Shanghai Universities, and the Ichthyologic Research Lab and a Specimen Lab established by senior Professor Mr. Zhu Yuanding, a key founder of ichthyology and a famous ichthyologist in China.
 
The college enjoys a faculty of 107, including 48 teachers with senior titles, and 37 postgraduate supervisors. There are 41 teachers with doctoral degree, and 8 are studying for it. The college has one postdoctoral station and 2 doctoral programs in aquaculture and aquatic biology; 7 master programs in aquaculture, aquatic biology, marine biology, animal nutrition and feed science, clinic veterinary medicine, biochemistry and molecular biology, and animal genetic breeding; and 7 bachelor programs in aquaculture, biology, biotechnology, environmental science, aquarium science and technology, zoology and horticulture, which constitute a complete academic educational system covering Bachelor, Master, Doctoral degrees, and Postdoctoral programs. Besides, the Aquaculture was appraised as the National Key Discipline in 2002 as well as the Key Discipline of Shanghai Municipality and the Ministry of Agriculture, and in 2005, Aquaculture was appraised as the Shanghai Municipal Key (Superior) Discipline. Aquatic Chemistry, Aquatic Biology, ichthyology and aquatic animal proliferation were appraised as Superior Courses by Shanghai Municipality successively, among which ichthyology became a national premium course.
 
For recent five years, the college has undertaken over 100 above provincial-and-ministerial key projects including those of the national “863”, scientific and technological brainstorm and supporting programs, “948” Program of the Ministry of Agriculture, the Span Program from the Ministry of Agriculture, the National Natural Science Foundation, some key projects of Shanghai, and international cooperation projects. There are 6 teachers who have been awarded with the title of "Twilight Scholar” and 15 provincial-and-ministerial levels or above prizes for science advancement. Professor Li Sifa was awarded the First Prize for Shanghai Science Advancement in 2002 and the Second Prize for National Science Advancement in 2004 for his successful selecting and breeding the Shanghai’s first good breeder of blunt snout bream “Pujiang No. 1”. There are 6 patents applied, and 500 academic papers and 26 books including monographs and textbooks published.
