The department of performance was established in 1978. There are 320 students at present, major in Peking Opera, physique form, dancing, and Kunqu Opera.
The Department aims on fostering the students with their basic theories and knowledge, basic skills and art creativities. It follows the strict rules of academism manner, insists on combining practicing with classroom teaching, and brings up talents who can both succeed the traditions and create new things.
In decades, the department has trained lots of outstanding performers. They are later become the nucleus and backbones of the opera field, and many of them came back to the university and participated in the teaching. In all the graduates since 1970s, more than 70 people are winners of important awards, such as “Club Award”, Wenhua Performance Award, Meilanfang Golden Award.
Lots of students have won various important awards when they’re still students. And many students were enrolled in famous theaters and took on the leading roles after graduation.
The department has always been attentive on the preservation of the conventions and the creation of new issues. It tries to stimulate and improve learning by inviting famous professors to teach, and improve the students’ level. In 60 years, the department of performance has recomposed, created and rearranged many famous plays, and participate and won many major art competitions and various awards.
The department has been continuously expending the scale of social practice. Every year, the students will actively take part in the New Year’s Peking Opera Party, which is prepared for the central government leaders; they also participate other major local cultural projects, and the “Opera in Air” of CCTV. They also went to the suburbs for charity performance and other social activities. The Department of Performance has respectively went to over 20 countries and districts for performance and academic communications, including the USA, Great Britain, France, Japan, Canada, Finland, Norway, etc. and established long-lasting co-operation relationships with other universities in Russia, Ukraine, Germane etc.

Entry requirements
For Bachelor’s Degree: Applicants must have an HSK test score of grade 6 or above, having graduated from high school or higher academic records and having passed the entry examinations.
For Master’s Degree: Applicants must have an HSK test score of grade 8 or above, having graduated from universities or higher academic records and having passed the entry examinations.
