The predecessor of the School of Mechanical Engineering was the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Hengyang Technical Faculty founded on August 8, 1983. In 1993, it was renamed as South China Technical Faculty. In 2000, the original South China Technical Faculty and the Hengyang Medical College merged into the University of South China. And the School of Mechanical Engineering was set up at that time. Currently, this school offers various undergraduate programs, such as Machinery Design, Manufacturing and Automation, processing units and control engineering, technology and equipment of observing and controlling, material molding and control engineering, etc.
The teaching staff of this school is reasonably structured. Currently, there are 68 teaching and administrative staffs, in which, 9 are professors, 24 are associate professors, 8 teachers have doctoral degrees, 18 are masters, 2 teachers have won the national outstanding teachers titles, 7 of them are young backbone teachers of Hunan province, etc.
The School of Mechanical Engineering has 7 teaching and research rooms of machinery design, manufacturing and automation, processing units and control engineering, technology and equipment of observing and controlling, fundamental of mechanical engineering, basics of mechanical design, material molding and control engineering and engineering graphics. Besides, it is equipped with experimental center of mechanical engineering, laser application and CNC machine center, the research and development center of mechanical and electrical technology, chemical process equipment research institute and reliability engineering laboratory. The total building area for the teaching and scientific experiment is 3,300 square meters.
This school attaches great importance to the moral education, ideological and political work. It was once chosen as advanced unit of moral education. In 2004, it was chosen as civilized unit and advanced unit of propaganda work by the University of South China. The employment rate of this school was more than 98% for successive years.

For international students, the academic year begins in September. The duration for application is from March 1st to June 30th.
