In 1996, East China University of Technology and Shanghai Machinery College merged into the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology. In 1999, Shanghai Optical Instrument Research Institute merged into this school. And in 2003, Shanghai Medical Instruments College and Shanghai Publication and Printing College were also incorporated in this university.
