The predecessor of the College of Liberal Arts and the College of Journalism and Communications was the department of Chinese language and literature founded in 1958. This department was one of the earliest-founded departments of the Heilongjiang University. Till now, College of Liberal Arts has a history of 41 years. And it has cultivated over 3,000 graduates for Heilongjiang Province and even the whole nation. This college has become an associate college of liberal arts which has great reputation and influence inside and outside the province. The present president of the college is the famous scholar of contemporary Chinese language- professor Yanghua.
 
College of Liberal Arts currently has 6 specialties: communication, Chinese language and literature, journalism, radio and television production, advertising and teach Chinese as a foreign language.
 
Based on the cultivation of undergraduate students, College of Liberal Arts actively develops the graduate students’ education at the same time. Currently, this college has 4 master’s programs (Chinese Philology, classical Chinese literature, comparative literature and world literature, modern and contemporary Chinese literature), of which, 2 are provincial level key disciplines (Chinese philology, classical Chinese literature) and the other two are university-level key disciplines.
 
At present, College of Liberal Arts has 48 teachers, among whom, 19 are professors, 17 are associate professors, 4 are doctors, 5 are doctoral students, 20 are masters (including doctoral degree candidates). This college has a number of famous experts and scholars who have great scientific attainments. Some of them have high prestige in the academic circles of the whole nation and great influence both at home and abroad.
 
This college has four research institutes: research institute of language, research institute of comparative literature and world literature, research institute of ancient books collation and research institute of traditional Chinese literature. All the researchers are part-time employees. They are all teachers from the College of Liberal Arts.
 
In recent years, College of Liberal Arts has gained remarkable achievements in scientific researches. Since 1998, this college has won 2 excellent teaching achievement prizes at provincial level, 2 scientific research achievement prizes at state-level and 11 scientific research achievement of social sciences prizes at provincial level. Besides, it has undertaken and finished 3 state-level scientific projects and 18 provincial level scientific research projects.

Application Time
For international students, the academic year begins in September. The duration for application is from March 1st to June 30th.
 
Entry Requirements
Undergraduates: senior high school graduate; HSK Band 6 or above; in good health.
 
Master candidates: Have a Bachelor’s degree or above; HSK Band 6 or above; in good health.
 
Doctor candidates: Have a Master’s degree or above, HSK Band 6 or above; in good health.
