After 20 years of construction, the Department of Sociology has developed into an institution containing a number of disciplines, including sociology, anthropology, demography, social work and social policy, and more than 20 sub-fields and research directions. In August 2007, the Sociology Program at Peking University was identified as a national first class key program by the Ministry of Education; and the Department of Sociology has been placed among 18 key nationally ranked departments in Peking University.
During the last two decades, the Department of Sociology of Peking University has expanded its faculty steadily and it has constantly improved its structures in teaching, research and social services. The Department now has 37 full-time teachers and researchers, of whom 20 have the title of professor, 16 have the title of associate professor, and there is one lecturer. Thirty three of these faculty members hold doctorate degrees and 4 have master degrees. Apart from this, the Department of Sociology has several honored faculty members, including one professor of "Chang Jiang (Yangtze River) Outstanding Scholars Program" and 2 visiting professors. In addition, the Department has hosted dozens of teachers and researchers as visiting scholars from other institutions in China and abroad.
From 1981 to 2007, there have been 939 undergraduate students enrolled in the Department and 704 of these students have graduated; 766 master’s degree students had been enrolled and of these 524 have graduated; and 213 doctoral degree students have enrolled and of these 130 have graduated. Currently, there are 552 students in sociology, social work and anthropology, of whom 181 are full-time undergraduate students from China and 67 are undergraduate students from oversees.
The Department of Sociology has close working relationships and maintains academic exchanges with universities in the United States, France, Britain, Japan, Australia, South Korea, Hong Kong and other areas. By inviting experts to give lessons and carry out cooperative research. The department has established good academic relationships with famous universities around the world, including the University of Michigan, the University of California, Yale University, Stanford University, University of Illinois, the University of Nottingham, Australian National University, University of Toronto, the Moscow State University, Waseda University, National University of Seoul, Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

Application time
For Bachelor’s degree, the application time is March 3 to March 7.
For Master’s degree and Doctoral degree applicants, the duration for application is September 15 to December 15. The academic year begins in September.
Entry requirements
For Bachelor’s degree: Applicants should have high school diploma, 3 recommendation letters by 3 associate professors or above, academic records, health certificate and HSK6 certificate, be or above 18 years old.
For Master’s degree: Applicants should have Bachelor’s degree, 3 recommendation letters by 3 associate professors or above, academic records, health certificate and HSK6 certificate, under the age of 40.
For Doctoral degree: Applicants should have Master’s degree, academic records, 3 recommendation letters by 3 associate professors or above, health certificate and HSK6 certificate, under the age of 45.
