Shandong University's School of Public Health was established in 1952. The school has experienced three phases. The first phase, between 1952 and 1976, saw the reorganization of Shandong Medical University's Department of Pub lic Health. The second phase began with the reestablishment of the Department of Public Health in 1977, with approval from the Ministries of Health and Education. In 1996, the name was changed to Shandong Medical University's School of Public Health. The third phase began in 2000, when Shandong University, Shandong Medical University, and Shandong Industrial University merged to form one unified institution known as Shandong University. At that time, the School of Public Health became part of the new Shandong University.
 
The School has ninety-five faculty members, including twenty-three full professors, eighteen associate professors, and twenty-one lecturers working in seven departments, four teaching laboratories, and six centers. The School's Department of Epidemiology and Health Statistics is recognized as a national key disciplinary. The Ministry of Health's Key Lab for Health Economics and Policy Research is hosted by the school.
 
There are two disease control study centers at the School: the Center for HIV/AIDS Control and the Center for Tuberculosis Control. These two centers were established by the university and are hosted by the School. The School also manages Shandong University 's Food Function Analysis Center, which mainly provides food inspection and testing services.
 
The School offers comprehensive training programs for both undergraduate and graduate students. The undergraduate program is a five-year program offering three distinct majors: preventive medicine, hygiene testing, and health administration. Around 120 undergraduates matriculate each year, for a total of six hundred undergraduates in the school. The School offers Master of Medicine, Doctor of Medicine, and Master of Public Health (MPH) training programs. Currently, 210 master's students, 60 PhD students, and over 300 MPH students study at the School. The School also offers a post-doctoral program focusing on preventive medicine.
 
Five departments provide both doctoral- and master-level training: Epidemiology and Health Statistics, Social Medicine and Health Administration, Nutrition and Food Health, Health Toxicology, and Hygiene Analysis and Testing. The departments of Environmental and Occupational Health and Maternal and Child Health provide master-level training only.
 
The School of Public Health researches a wide range of topics including infectious and non-communicable diseases control studies, environmental health, occupational health, nutrition, child and maternal health, and health policy and management. The school has received a number of research grants from both international and domestic funding bodies, including the World Health Organization, World Bank, UNICEF, EU, the National Natural Science Fund, “Project 863” and “Project 973”, and several national and provincial ministries. Approximately one hundred research projects are currently conducted by the school faculties, with grants of over twenty million RMB. Together, the faculty members publish around two hundred papers a year, including ten SCI papers.
