The history of the College of Chinese Language and Literature can be traced back to the department of Chinese language and literature founded in 1958. On December 28, 2000, the department of Chinese language and literature was formally renamed as Literary Arts School. And this school has the departments of Chinese literature and journalism. In 2003, the department of journalism became an independent school. In 2004, the Literary Arts School added a new major--- teach Chinese as a foreign language.
Currently, the College of Chinese Language and Literature has two departments- department of Chinese literature and department of Chinese linguistics, 2 undergraduate programs- Chinese language and literature and teaching Chinese as a foreign language. Besides, it has 9 teaching and research sections, such as ancient Chinese language and culture, contemporary Chinese language, teach Chinese as a foreign language, literature and art theory, classical Chinese literature, modern Chinese literature, Chinese contemporary literature, foreign literature and writing science.
Besides, the College of Chinese Language and Literature now has the doctoral program of comparative literature and world literature. And it also has the master’s programs of Chinese language and literature, Chinese philology, literature and art, classical Chinese literature, modern and contemporary Chinese literature, comparative literature and world literature. In addition, it has the right to confer the master’s degree of education.
Currently, there are 1,140 full-time undergraduate students, 191 full-time master students, 386 on-the-job master students and 30 doctoral students (not including the 16 doctoral students from Japan, Korea, Thailand, Hong Kong, Taiwan, etc.).
After over half century’s construction and development, the College of Chinese Language and Literature now has 77 teaching and administrative staffs. Of the 65 full-time teachers, 22 are professors, 20 are associate professors and 64.62% of the teachers are holders of the senior professional titles. 60 of the teachers has master’s degrees or above, occupying 92.31% of all the teachers.
In recent three years, the teachers of the College of Chinese Language and Literature have undertaken over 60 teaching and scientific research projects of all kinds, in which, 31 are humane and social science projects at provincial and ministerial level or above, 10 projects are financed by the national social science fund. The total research funding is 1,200,000 yuan. During the past three years, the teachers of this school have published over 50 academic monographs and teaching materials. And they have published over 300 theses on various academic journals, in which, over 100 are published in core journals.
Since its foundation, the College of Chinese Language and Literature has cultivated over ten thousand talents. They can be found in all industries both at home and abroad. In recent years, 26 students of the school have passed the examination of the Ministry of Education of Singapore and have gone to Singapore as teachers. Besides, some have gone to the countries like Thailand, Vietnam, Mexico, Argentina, etc. as volunteers of Chinese language teachers.

For international students, the academic year begins in September. The duration for application is from March 1st to June 30th.

Undergraduates: High school graduate; 18 years of age or older; HSK Grade 3; Academic record of high school; 2 recommendation letters from teachers.
Master candidates: Have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree; HSK Grade 6; Academic record of undergraduate courses; 2 recommendation letters from professors.
Doctor candidates: Have obtained a Master’s Degree; HSK Grade 6; Academic record of undergraduate courses; 2 recommendation letters from professors.
