The Department of Chinese Language & Literature, established in 1951, is one of the earliest departments of East China University. There were a large number of first-level scholars teaching in the department, including Xujie, Xu Zhongyu, Qian Gurong and so on. The faculties have published a lot of works with great influence in various fields, including Contemporary & Modern Chinese Literature, Literature Theory & Criticism, Ancient Chinese Literature, and Chinese Language & Literature.
At present, Ancient Chinese Literature of the Department is the key discipline of National and Shanghai. And there are many researches having reached the advanced rank in the world. The Department was authorized to own first-level programs for Doctoral degree in 2000. Currently, it covers 12 doctoral stations including Ancient Chinese Literature, History of Chinese literature Criticism, Chinese Language & Literature, Literature & Art, Comparative Literature & World Literature, Contemporary & Modern Literature, Classical Documents, Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, International Chinese, Literature & Media, Literature & Art & Folk, and Chinese Aspects of Literature Theory.
The library of the Department owns 380,0000 volumes of books, 20 kinds of newspapers and academic magazines which can tremendously meet the needs of teaching and learning What’s more, the Department attaches great importance on establishing wide corporations and relationships with domestic and international universities in academic exchange.
As one of the departments with prestigious faculty of East China Normal University, it enrolls a great number of students throughout the world every year and aims to cultivate intellectuals of Chinese Language & Literature. Currently, most of the students are recommended to related master stations or doctoral stations in different universities. And some of them have become the backbone of institutes, research centers, and administrative offices and so on.

For Bachelor’s degree, Master’ degree, Doctoral degree, the applicants should apply before June 15.
Entry requirements
For Bachelor’s degree: the applicants should have senior high school diploma, academic records, and HSK3 certificate.
For Master’s degree: the applicants should have Bachelor’s degree, recommended by two associate professors or above, academic records, and HSK6 certificate.
For Doctoral degree:the applicants should have Master’s degree, academic records, recommended by two associate professors or above, health certificate and HSK6 certificate.
