The Department of Sociology was originally founded in 2001 and affiliated to the College of Law and Politics. In June 2007, it formally became an individual sub-unit.
Currently the department has 20 faculty, among whom there are 16 fulltime teachers, including 5 professors, 4 associate professors and 7 lecturers. And the part-time teachers all have associate professors certificate at least. Since 1999, the department has employed several doctors of sociology from Hitotsubashi University, Rikkyo University and Osaka City University in Japan, Moscow State University in Russia, University of Hong Kong, Chinese University of Hong Kong, Lingnan University (Hong Kong) and other well-known domestic universities.
Since it started to enroll postgraduates in 1982, the department now has more than 120 master graduate students, who are very popular in the society after graduation. Currently, the department has two bachelor’s programs: Sociology and Social Work, two master’s programs: Sociology and Social Work & Management, and has set up several master and doctoral programs of ClassⅠdisciplines (e.g. Demology, anthropology and Folklore) with other intramural units.
Since it started to enroll undergraduate students in Sociology in 2000, the department has followed the principle of “to reform the teaching system and to train first class talents in sociology” and carried out bilingual teaching to some core courses, aiming to help students to lay a strong foundation of professional theory and improve the practical abilities of thinking and searching individually.
For the past few years, The Department of Sociology has been very active in international academic exchanges. It has established close academic exchange and cooperation links with a number of famous universities and institutions around the world such as America, France, German, Japan, Russia, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Entry requirements
For Bachelor’s degree: the applicants should have senior high school diploma, academic records, and HSK3 certificate.
For Master’s degree: the applicants should have Bachelor’s degree, recommended by two associate professors or above, academic records, and HSK6 certificate.
For Doctoral degree: Applicants should have Master’s degree, academic records, recommended by two associate professors or above, health certificate and HSK6 certificate.
