Three Levels in Long-term Chinese Language Programmes
The Programmes last from six months to three years. students are placed into classes of different levels according to their proficiency in Chinese upon enrollment. the classes are divided into three levels: elementary, intermediate, and advanced.
The elementary level accepts international students with no foundation of Chinese language. it concentrates on teaching students basic Chinese knowledge and training their language skills.
The intermediate level aims at those international students who have had above 600 level hours to study Chinese and have grasped over 2,000 vocabularies. it focuses on further developing students’ reading and writing skills while enhancing their basic Chinese knowledge.
The advanced level is for those international students who have had above 1,200 level hours to study Chinese and have grasped over 3,500 words. its emphasis is on training students’ overall Chinese language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) and helping students gain an insight into Chinese culture and society.
Educational objective:
(a) Elementary level:
The students shall have language communication abilities for daily life and make basis for future studies. The students shall have the ability to apply modern Chinese in real use and have comprehensive abilities of listening, speaking, reading and writing. The students are required to grasp approximately 3,000 words, 800 everyday expressions and basic grammar in common use every academic year.
(b) Intermediate level:
To further the students' understanding towards Chinese, to improve their real ability of language communication, and to help them make foundations for studies in advanced phases. To foster the students to have a better understandings towards Chinese culture. To require the students to grasp 5,000 words, 2,200 everyday expressions, and basic grammar on what has already been achieved.
(c) Advanced level:
After 1 year of study, the students shall be able to skillfully use Chinese in their own specialized field and make a sound foundation for further studies. The students shall be able to understand the social life, politics, economy, local conditions and traditional customs of China on a broader background. The students can grasp over 7,000 words and approximately 4,000 Chinese characters in common use.
In general, after one to two years' training in these language Programmes, the students would be enabled to attend the classes instructed in normal speed Chinese for the native Chinese students. The students whose Chinese proficiency meet the HSK test requirement (HSK band 3 for natural science students and HSK band 6 for liberal arts students and HSK band 6 for prosgraduate studies) and other related conditions can be recommended by the College of International Education to conduct undergraduate study in other colleges or departments of Guilin University of Technology.

Beginners’ Short-term Chinese Language Programme in 2009
China is an oriental nation with a long history of civilization. If you are interested in learning the Chinese language, knowing about China's politics, economy and ancient civilization, and visiting places of historical interest and scenic attractions, just join in our short-term programme in Chinese language and culture. In the course of the programme, you can study Chinese, attend series of lectures on Chinese culture such as Chinese history, culture, economy, education, arts, etc., In the meanwhile you can visit some historical relics and scenic attractions, factories, countryside, local families, and talk with Chinese students. As Guilin is a city world-renowned for its unique beauty of mountains and rivers, the college can also help you with your tour in Guilin and its vicinity. Anyway, our Chinese language-culture programmes organized during the summer or winter break will make your vacation a pleasant, meaningful and unforgettable one.

>> Curriculum:
Morning: mainly Chinese reading and writing as well as listening and oral Chinese .
Afternoon: mainly culture courses like music, calligraphy, painting, Chinese martial arts and lectures on Chinese history, culture and economic.
>> Language practice: Visits to some scenic spots in Guilin, city markets, factories, middle schools, visiting local Chinese families, hospitals, kindergartens and so on. Language practice is usually held on Wednesday afternoons or Saturdays.
>> Trips: Self-paid trips to Yang Shuo, Long Shen, Xin An, etc. can be arranged if more than 15 students are willing to go. Tour in Guilin can be self-arranged by students.
>> Certificates: College of International Education (CIE) will issue certificates for completion of study indicating the study periods.
>>Application deadline:
1.Before March 9th 2009 for the spring semester; or
2.Before September 15th 2009 for the fall semester.
>>Visa: ●Please apply for a "F" visa (visitor’s visa) valid for over 90 days by going to the Chinese embassy in your country with the Admission notice and visa application form (JW202) from us.

Chinese Cultural Tour
To provide a good opportunity for groups of international students and visitors to promote their understanding of Chinese language & culture, Chinese history, education in China, scenic attractions and historical relics in Guilin and to experience the on-going reforms and great changes in China.
I. Objectives
1. At the end of the designed programme with a mandarin language curriculum of 10-16 class hours per week, learners of elementary level, intermediate level and advanced level are expected respectively to learn by heart 50-100 characters each week and be able to
(1) Communicate in Chinese with simple and brief, fairly fluent, and sort of sophisticated Chinese expressions accordingly;
(2) Understand simple, special, and standard basic daily conversations in Chinese accordingly;
(3) Grasp basic Chinese character structural formation and stroke orders;
(4) Grasp basic Chinese pronunciation and grammar, sound right and use grammar in an acceptable way;
2. At the end of the component of 4-6 class hours per week of cultural lecture series, visits and field trips, participants are expected to :
(1) Have a brief understanding of Chinese history and civilization;
(2) Have a general impression of Chinese society and experience the Chinese way of life;
(3) Learn basic theories and skills of Chinese painting and calligraphy;
(4) Learn about Chinese folk art and folklore;
(5) Have a general knowledge of the Chinese culture, minority ethnic mores in Guangxi, and the historical relics and scenic attractions in Guilin.
