Nanjing Agricultural University (NAU) is not only a national key university of high learning directly administered by the Ministry of Education, but also one of the earliest higher education establishments for agriculture. It has a good reputation both at home and abroad in all fields of agricultural science. Its predecessors were two agricultural colleges belonging to JinlingUniversity and NanjingUniversity (originally called the CentralUniversity). In 1952, the college was created as a result of the merger of these two agricultural colleges, together with some departments of the Agricultural College of Zhejiang University. In 1984, the college was renamed NanjingAgriculturalUniversity. October 20 is its anniversary. The current President is Prof. Zheng Xiaobo.

The main campus of the university is situated in the picturesque eastern suburbs of Nanjing and is near the impressive and world-renowned Sun-Yat-Sen's Mausoleum. As an important base for agricultural education and research in China, NAU, together with its predecessors, has trained more than 25,000 qualified personnel in the fields of agricultural education, research, science and technology, finance and trade, and administration, who are working at home and abroad. By taking the advantages of comprehensive disciplines and a strong faculty force, the university has undertaken various kinds of scientific projects, and has obtained outstanding achievements in theoretic and applied research as well as production and extension. At the same time, the university is actively involved in local economic construction so as to enable the science and technology to serve the production directly. In total, these are six academic periodicals published in the university, such as "Journal of Nanjing Agricultural University", "History of China's Agriculture", "Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine".

NAU pays great attention to international collaborations and exchanges. It has established relationships with 30 foreign institutions. In recent years, research co-operation with developed countries and personnel training for developing countries have become two important features of the university. All these activities have undoubtedly stimulated the vigorous development of internationalized education and research in the university.

While NAU is proud to reflect on its past years of achievements, it recognizes the need to look to the future and provide China with the necessary skilled and qualified agricultural personnel and technology that the country needs in its process of modernization.
