On 16 July, 2004, School of Bioscience and Bioengineering (BSE) was founded on the picturesque South Campus of SCUT in the City of Universities. BSE possesses one independent teaching and researching building which is near 1,000 square meters with well-equipped facilities valuing at 50 million Yuan (RMB) or so. There are 2 key laboratories, named the Guangdong Provincial key laboratory of zymolysis and enzyme engineering as well as the key laboratory of industrial biotechnology of the Department of Education of Guangdong Province, and 3 departments, namely the Department of Bioengineering, the Department of Bioscience, the Department of Biomedical Engineering.

At present, there are 62 staffs, among them, 41 teachers, 8 experiment technologists, 10 full professors, 17 associate professors, 1 foreign professor, 9 doctoral instructors, and 29 master instructors. The total number of postgraduates is 186, and 39 candidates working for doctor degrees. BSE has one post-doctoral station of light industrial technology. BSE offers 4 Ph.D. programs and 6 master programs. Its “Industrial Biotechnology” has been listed into the provincial innovative technological platform of “985 project”. It is responsible for many projects of national “863 project”, “985 project”, Nature science foundation projects, and provincial projects, such as Guandong nature science foundation project, Guangdong key technology projects, as well as some key technology project of Guandzhou.
 
BSE enrolls 200 undergraduates majoring in biology engineering (provincial top-ranking discipline, including 2 directions of biology engineering and bio-pharmacy), biotechnology, bio-medical engineering every year.
