In January 2008, School of Mechanical & Automotive Engineering (SAME) was founded by merging the College of Mechanical Engineering, the College of Automotive Engineering, the College of Industrial Equipment and Control Engineering. The Schools history can be tracked back to the establishment of the Department of Mechanical Engineering in 1952 when the South China University of Technology (SCUT) was founded. Over the past 50 years, especially after SCUT being selected as one of the key universities under Chinese national education development plans named “Project 211 for Higher Education” and “Project 985 for World-class University”, the School has made significant progress in both research and teaching. Currently the SMAE is not only a well reputed center for high level research, but also an important high education base in the south China region for high quality education and training in the fields of mechanical and automotive engineering.

SMAE is one of Chinese leading Schools in mechanical and automotive engineering. The School has 9 academic institutes and research centers, including 66 full professors and 107 associate professors. In addition, the SMAE employs and supports a number of full-time researchers, such as post-doctoral fellows, visiting scientists and exchange scholars.
