Shanghai International Studies University has a long history of doing research and practice in the field of teaching Chinese as a foreign language. In 1994, with the school leader's support, the College of International Culture Exchange was established, and now there have been 43 administrative staff , more than 50% teachers have associate professor the title and above, the teachers of TCFL all has the specialized certificate of teaching qualification, and keep rich overseas teaching experience.
After the establishment of the College, with the predecessor research the college has established three scientific research key points, namely the teaching Chinese as a foreign language research and studies, the linguistics and the applied linguistics, the Chinese culture research with this related Chinese main body. Until now, it has published the monograph more than 30; among them many have received the honor of state-level and the provincial level outstanding books prize. Also sees the result in the outside Chinese teaching material compilation aspect, undertakes the international cooperation to compile the teaching material planned project which teaching material's project and the national Chinese manages.
The college develops the foreign student Chinese teaching vigorously, from a long or short Chinese advanced studies class to the foreign student school record education, has formed the multiplex Chinese educational model from undergraduate to master, doctor degree, which helps to establish the complete school record education system. Since 1980, there has been students from 49 nations, and the total number accumulated 6071, the long-term foreign student s’ population has surpassed on outside full-time in the school Chinese students’ total number of people 10%. What is worth mentioning specially is the foreign student undergraduate course educates, the scale of study programs is getting bigger and bigger, the student population increases day by day, the student comes from Japan, South Korea, Russia, Ukraine, the Slovenia, Portugal separately and so on. In addition, the school and the overseas university carry multilateral cooperation on both sides and have fulfilled a lot.
The goal of the college is to achieve the teaching standardization and excellent control system to guarantee the undergraduate course, and graduates’ quality and quantity. Until now, the result of HSK test, the graduation rate enhances year by year, and there have been undergraduates who can obtain the diploma and certificate for successive 7 years.
