BEIJING DANCE ACADEMY
GUIDELINE FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
A BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO BEIJING DANCE ACADEMY Beijing Dance Academy is the only institution of higher education in dance in China, which lies near the picturesque Zi Zhu Park (Purple Bamboo Park) in Haidian District, Beijing. The Academy has 480 teachers and administrative staff, among whom, 275 are full-time teachers. Of the 275 teachers, 116 are professors, associate professors and senior lecturers. At present, more than two thousand students are studying in the Academy.
Three specialties have been established in the Academy, namely, performance, choreography and dance studies. Performance Specialty consists of such disciplines as Chinese Classical Dance, Chinese Folk Dance, Ballet, Modern Dance, Musical Theatre, International Ballroom Dance, Fashion Show and so on. The Academy was approved by the State Academic Degree Commission to be an authorized unit to grant the MA degree in 1999.
The teaching departments include the Department of Chinese Classical Dance, Department of Chinese Folk Dance, Department of Ballet, Department of Choreography, Department of Dance Studies, Department of Social Dance, Department of Musical Theatre, Department of Art Communication, Department of Art Design, Department of Social Sciences, Music Department, College of Continuing Education, and Chinese Dance Grading Examination Center. The Academy has some other sections, such as the Dance Research Institute, Library & Dance information Center, Audio & Visual Center, the Youth Dance Company as well as the attached Secondary Dance School honored as one of the key specialized secondary schools in China.
The Academy is proud of its talented faculty, a great variety of dance forms as well as abundant teaching materials and rigorous approaches to academic research. Every year, the Academy invites foreign guest artists to teach and teachers of the Academy are invited to teach abroad as well. The Academy has made remarkable achievements in teaching, scientific research and artistic practice over the past decades. The Academy has cultivated a great number of dancers, dance teachers, choreographers as well as researchers in dance history and theory. Thanks to the worldwide cultural exchanges and outstanding achievements in different kinds of international dance competitions, the Academy is ranked among the best institutions in China and the prestigious dance academies in the world.
PROGRAMS AND FIELDS OF SPECIALIZATION
The Academy has three majors: performance, dance choreography and dance study. And there are different fields of specialization for the major of performance. They are Chinese Classical dance, Chinese National & Folk Dance, Ballet, Musical Theater, International Standard Ballroom Dance and Fashion Show.

STUDYING AND LIVING CONDITIONS
The Academy has a beautiful campus and various facilities, including 50 professional dance studios, a gymnasium with different kinds of appliances, a small theater with full performance function and a library with the most complete books and audio/video materials on dance. There is a new teaching and living building for foreign students, in which there are 42 standard rooms for accommodation with air conditioner, telephone, TV set, desk, chairs, sofa and private bath room. Hot water is available 24 hours. There are two dining halls and one restaurant for daily meals, as well as a clinic with physical therapy devices on campus.
QUALIFICATIONS FOR ADMISSION
Master's degree program: the applicant should have a Bachelor's degree in a related field or evidence of its equivalent, and must get the certificate of level 6 of HSK (a Chinese Language Proficiency Test) and pass the qualifying examination.
College certificate and Bachelor's degree program: the applicant should be a secondary school graduate or with equivalent schooling, and must get the certificate of level 6 of HSK and pass the qualifying examination.
Ordinary visiting scholar programs: the applicant should be a secondary school graduate or with equivalent schooling, and with certain basis of Chinese language and dance.
Note: The applicant should be healthy and under the age of 40.
ADMISSION PROCEDURES
1. Chinese government scholarship students
The guideline is provided by the relevant agreement between China and their respective countries.
2. Non-scholarship students
(1) The applicant needs to contact the Foreign Affairs Office for the Application Form. The applicant for certificate or degree program (Master's degree, Bachelor's degree or college certificate program) needs to return the Application Form to the office together with required supporting materials, including photocopy of diploma (or certificate issued by schools for this year's graduates), photocopy of passport, personal dance video tape and four passport photos, 3 months prior to the qualifying examination. The applicant for ordinary visiting scholar program needs to do the same, 3 months prior to the beginning of the program session. Extra materials are needed for the applicant for Master's degree program, which include college transcript, thesis on dance and two letters of recommendation from professors.
(2) Having provided required documents and materials, the applicant for certificate or degree program must attend the qualifying examination according to the examination schedule of the Academy.
(3) The applicant who is admitted will receive “the Notice of Admission of Beijing Dance Academy” and the “Visa Application Form for Foreign Students” ( JW202 Form).
Note: The qualifying examination for Master's degree program will be held every January. The qualifying examination for college certificate and Bachelor's degree program will be held every April.
3. Short term training program
The organizer can directly contact the Foreign Affairs Office and discuss the details such as time and content of study.
4. Other information
(1) School beginning time
The student for certificate and degree program should start school every September. The student for ordinary visiting scholar program should normally start school every September or every March.
(2) Visa application
If the study duration is more than 6 months, the student must apply for the X visa, and the Academy will not accept other visa types. If the study duration is less than 6 months, the student must apply for the F visa.
(3) Insurance
According to the international practice and the regulations set by related Chinese governmental departments, the student whose study duration is more than 6 months must buy the insurance of personal accidental damage and hospitalization.
