Founded in 1999, the School of Mechanical Engineering, Dalian University of Technology, comprises late Department of Mechanical Engineering founded in 1949, Institute of Die & Mould and the Engineering Training Center.
There are 220 faculty and staff members in the school, including 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), 28 professors (22 of them are supervisors for Doctoral Degree), 72 associate professors or equivalents. Among faculty members, 64 have doctoral degree; one wins the National Funds for Outstanding Youth; 2 are qualified as ones in the “National New Century Hundred-Thousand-Ten-thousand Talent Project”; 1 is qualified as one in the “Trans-Century Talent Project of the Ministry of Education”; 5 win the Fund Supporting New Century Excellent Talent of the Ministry of Education; 1 is qualified as a Discipline Outstanding Talent in Higher Education of Liaoning Province; 4 are qualified as ones of Hundred-Talent and 6 as ones of Thousand-Talent, respectively, in the “Liaoning Provincial New Century Hundred-Thousand-Ten-thousand Talent Project”. The school has a research team in “Precision/Non-Conventional Machining and Micro-Manufacturing”.
So far, more than 10 000 undergraduate students, 1564 graduate students with master’s degree and 223 with doctoral degree have graduated from the school. And 23 post-doctoral researchers have also completed their work in the school. At present, there are 2524 students studying in the school, including 1636 full-time undergraduate students, 654 graduate students for master’s degree and 217 for doctoral degree, with 17 post-doctoral researchers still working.
The school now has two doctoral degree conferring points and post-doctoral research stations in the first-level disciplines “Mechanical Engineering” and “Instrument Science & Technology”, one national second-level key discipline “Mechanical Manufacturing and its Automation” and two Liaoning provincial first-level key disciplines “Mechanical Engineering” and “Instrument Science & Technology”. Also in the school, there is a Key Laboratory for Precision and Non-Conventional Machining of the Ministry of Education, a Liaoning Provincial Key Laboratory for Micro-Nano-Technology and System, an Engineering Research Center for Die & Mould and Plastics Items of the Ministry of Education, and a National Demonstrating Engineering Training Center for Experiment Teaching.
Over the years, the school has formed a structure with two centers of Teaching and Research. A series of national major research projects and engineering projects have been undertaken in the school, including the major projects and the key projects funded by National Natural Science Foundation of China, the projects in the National Key Fundamentals R & D Program “973” and the projects in the National High-Tech R & D Program “863”, etc., with research funds obtained in the past 3 years exceeding RMB 100 millions. As a result, a series of theoretical and technical achievements have been obtained, including 3 national technology progress awards, 1 national technology invention awards and more than 30 provincial or ministerial science & technology awards.
The School of Mechanical Engineering of Dalian University of Technology has become an important base for scientific research, technical development and talent culturing in China.
